Is this a good idea? To have travel insurance in Canada and use one's public school's medical plan simultaneously?

Yes, someone please do tell. And if so, how does one go abotu getting travel insurance here? Can it be done at the airport? Are there outfits or agencies to stay away from? Can I do ti through my bank, or HSBC? (PLanning on setting up an account there next week)

Depends on your province.

Not that I'm advising you not to have extra health insurance, but if you buy Canadian health insurance and you live in Ontario, it's likely OHIP will get wind that you're not in the country anymore.

If you're out of Canada for more than 212 days out of a year, you have to tell OHIP, and it's a major pain in the ass to do so.

(if you don't tell them there's no way for them to find out, just make sure your card doesn't get used!)

If you have a credit card with a reasonable limit, you can rely on that for little emergency stuff before your Korean insurance kicks in... if you get seriously ill you should probably be coming home anyway.

Personally I just take the risk... but recognize that it is a bit of a risk not having the extra health insurance over and above the korean one.
