Dog Is Taken Off the Menu in Beijing
Beijings dogs are in luck, at least through the Olympics.
The state-run Xinhua News Agency reported Friday that dog meat has been removed from the menus of the 112 officially designated Olympic restaurants.
Xinhua quoted Beijing Tourism Bureau vice director Xiong Yumei as saying that all non-designated restaurants should also suggest other non-canine dishes to their guests. Perhaps some chicken without sexual life?
Beijings ban follows a similar no-dog rule enforced by South Korea during the 1988 Seoul Olympics, which was instituted under a law prohibiting the sale of foods deemed unsightly, according to the Associated Press.
At least one animal rights organization, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is saying that the ban is a step in the right direction. The group has been documenting what it calls Chinas ongoing dog slaughter on its Web site.
Its a step, PETA President Ingrid Newkirk told Rings. One hopes it will continue after the Olympics and not just be for show during this limited time. Its not only that its a cultural difference, but this is the land where Buddhism prevailed for so long and actually perfected vegetarian foods so China is perfectly set up to get rid of dog meat forever, she said.
There are currently no laws in China to protect animals, Newkirk added. All have seen some horror. The Olympics are a perfect time to start real, lasting protection for all the animals. |

I read a similar article that had this to say:

Concerned that canine dishes might offend animal rights groups and Western visitors, Beijing said restaurants expected to be popular among foreign visitors must stop serving dog meat "to respect the dining customs of different countries." |
My question is why shouldn't foreign visitors be expected 'to respect the dining customs of different countries', specifically the host country in this case? |

Because there will be no 'pro-dog meat' protestors, and dog meat is not necessary to China's national security (certain other controversial issues are). |

FVCK PETA. It's not a step in the right direction. It's left wing moralistic fools trying to tell the rest of the world how to live.
PETA are a bunch of fools who think it's cool to ruin other peoples clothes.
How many of these bull dykes who throw paint on a womans coat wear leather jackets leather shoes. No one wears more black leather than Pamela Anderson |

Wow. Bad day?
Yes, Westerners should respect that people in Asia eat different animals than we do. Hindu's don't throw fits cause we eat cows. |

The solution is simple force every single person on this planet to eat dog at least once. Even then the self rightious who feel they are superior to the rest of all us meer mortals will be converted into the greatness of dogeating. |

Or, take them to see the dog being prepared for slaughter. Watch them yelping in agony and terror, while they are tortued. Sometimes it takes a few days of torture before the dog is deemed ready for the kill. Dogs are often 'treated' with blow torches to get their adrenelin going, so the inadequate little men who eat them can feel more macho. |

Yep.
I have no problem with the eating of dogs. It's the way they are slaughtered that makes me ill.
If it were something like simply slitting their throats, shooting a bolt into their heads, or cutting off the heads, I would say go for it. The cruel and deliberately inhumane way of preparing dogs for slaughter is sickening. |

No. This represents a(nother) step forward for the Chinese. Bill Clinton was complaining about Beijing's one-way attitude re: cultural respect in the 1990s. Beijing sought to dictate the American govt's issuing visas to Taiwanese officials in one instance. Clinton lost patience at one point and responded, privately, and to an aide
Quote: |
Just as the Chinese demand to be respected in their way, they have to respect our way...[Just as] we are supposed to be sensitive to their traditions and history, they need to be sensitive to ours. |
And, in this case, Clinton cited a strong congressional majority in favor of granting a visa to the democratically-elected Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui, who spoke at Cornell's commencement ceremonies in spring 1995.
Beijing has considered itself the center of the universe for over two thousand years. All those outside the center remained, in their estimation, barbarians who would have to respect Chinese ways. But small things like this have been changing tit-for-tat between China and the United States (and others in the West) since the 1970s.
Good for Beijing for wanting to include and not alienate "foreigners" who might come to China to see the Olympic games. |

I worked in a battery chicken farm shortly before coming to Korea. If you object to such things then you might like to give up eating eggs and chicken as well. |

Or take them to a modern dog restaurant where they are simply, humanely electrocuted. |

I did. Years ago. I will only buy eggs if they are from free range chickens, and they have been certified by a respected animal welfare association. That means paying 3 or 4 times the price of cage eggs, and I do it gladly. As for chickens I prefer live over dead. There are plenty of plantbased substances that taste just as good. |
