Anyone know Shanghai well enough to suggest a few decent locations for hotels to recommend?

Ideally, I DONT want to be near the BUND, and hope to be as close as possible near to places to go at night, and near enough to a subway to get around to everywhere else during the daytime.

Anyone have some suggestions? Wink

I once stayed at the Shanghai Holiday Inn. It is currently about $70US dollars a night for a basic room. In the same block as Shanghai Station and the subway.

Yes it is a hideous western chain hotel that I would normally avoid, but at least there are no nasty surprises.

So many 4 star Chinese hotels would be 2 star hotels in any other country, in some countries it is worth paying a bit more, especially in the heat of the summer.

Maggies youth hostel is in a good area where there is both western and chinese food. I lived there once for 3 months. The bus right out in front of the hostel goes to the bund. Also it is close to windows- which has really cheap drinks.
