I've heard about Apple dicounts for public school teachers here. Is this true?

Would love to know if I should utilize my fried who works in the pub. system.

I would have to argue strongly against getting an apple over here. There are host of annoying problems with apples, though they have a "technically far superior OS and (used to) better hardware. One of the main reasons, is that any look at today's apple will tell you that if they were in the same spot as Microsoft they'd be even worse abusers of power. Their planned obsolescence (been sued in Europe over this) and fierce monopolization of repairs are big things to deal with.

I really think the best cost saver is to get some $600 laptop from a USA company and then have family mail it to you over here. If you're from Can/Britain I don't know what prices are like.

Of course, this is all depends. If you're near Seoul/incheon/busan you'll have better access to techies if you have problems. I know there's a lot of Apple fanboy-ism but I've known too many people who've had problems with the computer that "just works" to recommend it. Albeit comps are pricey here, you could get the same EXACT model from home and shipped abroad for far cheaper.

On that topic, what would be the cheapest place to get an apple? Do they do the regional Intellectual property garbage where they lock computers to a given language? The things cost a fortune in the States, but I don't imagine there's anywhere to get them for cheaper, is there?

My Mac notebook works great in Korea. The service center at Chungmuro station is great and fast. There are only 2 real problems:

1. Having a non-apple trained tech look at your computer. At my school, I simply needed the TCPIP address to connect to the LAN line. Of course, the school's computer guy though he could do it. "Where is Control Panel??" "This isn't a Windows computer." "Control Panel?" After a minute, he just wrote down the numbers for me, no problem. Apples are super user friendly and easy.

2. Some Korean websites don't work due to Windows-only software. This is more of an issue for my girlfriend as she does some official business on Korean sites. She's had to use a PC bang before when needing to login to a certain site, but it's never a problem for me. Plus, half of the Korean sites won't let you join unless you are Korean.

Yes, you can get a teacher discount with Apple in Korea. I had my Korean co-teacher order some stuff for me from the Apple online store here, and they gave her a 5% discount on everything. It was a very pleasant surprise!

I think the discount may vary depending on what you are buying. I bought some peripherals (cables and the like), and the discount was 5%. I haven't bought any hardware like a MacBook, so the discount may be higher for these. If it's 10%, that's fantastic!

But at least we all agree that there is a discount for teachers .
