The ESL Slacker's Gazette

Vol. I July 15, 2008

Asia's only publication FOR ESL slackers BY ESL slackers!

In This Month's Issue:

- Vocabulary bingo can't possibly last 80 minutes. WANNA BET!

- What to say to a child who doesn't like to color.

- Proof that even smart assed middle schoolers can be bribed into doing a 6 year old's arts and crafts project.

- Effective responses to the phrase, "finish teacha, finish teacha".
a. No you're not. b. Like hell you are! c. So. d. and your point is?

- Parent Conference? No problem. Simply sit through the meeting, nod gratuitously, and occasionally give your translator a sincere look that you actually care.

- Why you should start every class by screaming "first one finished gets no sticker."

- How to get those "at home moms" to bring pizza or McDonalds to your class even if there's absolutely nothing to celebrate.

- Can you say cut and paste? I knew ya could.

- The key to a successful snack party is to have the kids bring the snacks.
Rule #1: Bring no snack, get no snack! Kids learn this lesson overnight and your class will resemble a Family Mart chip rack at your next party.

And finally, this month's words by which to live.....

Hey, can I borrow your UNO cards?

Ha ha, that's so funny. I'd like to get a copy. Where did you see this at? In a subway station? Or someplace in Itaewon?

It actually might give good ideas, but with a sense of humor.

heh, "what to say to a child who doesn't like to color"

"first one finished gets no sticker."

GOLD!!!

I actually think that being an ESL slacker is pretty much the right attitude for a lot of jobs in the ROK. Saves you getting stressed out, keeps the kids happy, which keeps your boss happy, and you actually make space for kids to use English in a natural context.

Anyway, that's not really helping your thread at all, and I wanna see heaps more ESL slacker suggestions, so here's mine

- How to enjoy a healthy dong chim!

- How to pack a 6-period teacher equipment basket - slacker style

What about how to kill time at your summer camp.

This is something I'm toying with right now.

Or even better get them to do a skit. They will spend hours with their faces buried in the dictionary. Then you will have to correct the script.
Then they will rehearse it and have a final performance.

You can kill enough time for a whole camp with this. Most of it for you is just walking arround correcting their script and watching them rehearse.

I used to play a lot of cards when I taught kids...especially that great Phillipino game, 'big two.' In North America it's called 'ashsole.'

I just got the kids to 'say it when you play it.' Like, "I play a four," "I play a six," "I play three sevens," "I play the magic two and nuke you all, hahaha, I am president."

There is a different series that my sister was really into when we were kids... it had a list (in English) of things that you had to find in a picture.

Used to spend hours looking for all those "pennies".

i'm starting to agree. I tried being a real teacher but the kids don't like and whine to the director. So I guess my class will now be games and a light peppering of english. Since all the report cards have to be As anyways its not like anyone will notice the lack of improvement.
