IMO, Japanese sounds the best,. It sounds really cute but it could just be that chick's voice.

Mandarin sounds awful; it's overly tonal, bounces all over the place.

I've learned both Japanese and Mandarin, and I'd argue it's the individual dude speaking Chinese that makes it sound so bad. He's using a very sharp Beijing accent, stressing the "R" sounds waaaay too hard. Most other Chinese make fun of this accent.

I guess I would say that Korean does sound better than Mandarin when both are spoken "nicely". But Korean is usually whined or screamed..... I guess that's more local culture then the fault of the language itself, though. In practice, I tend to prefer to listen to Mandarin over Korean.

For a good example of Mandarin spoken properly, listen to the dramas on HaoTV. The train dude, and the announcers on the TV channel Star Sports, both speak very harsh Mandarin.

I can't add anything to that; at its best, especially spoken by women, Korean has an harmonic tone, none rendered better than the female velvet-talking radio hosts. Korean spoken by men seems to be a rougher, more guttural language, accompanied with a lot of expectoration. Yes, the female pitch can become whiny (to the point where you just want to ask them to shut the hell up), but the male of the species is still largely speaking with the voice of his ancestor that he's so proud of, the one from 5000 years ago.

However, I've been in Japan for a while and have been watching a Korean drama. The shrillness and whiny sound that I am hearing is driving me BANNANAS!!! I hadn't realized how WHINY Korean sounds!! Especially the women!!!

Korean has really been annoying me lately. The whining and also the slurping sounds before they speak or when thinking about things. The grunts and guttoral noises get to me as well.

I also hate that sound of a Korean guy lecturing someone.. or whatever thats called. You know those times when some older Korean man (a bus driver for example) is rambling on and on in a seemingly one-sided conversation.. and some woman seems sucked into this 'yeah yeah' and having to listen and agree with him for 10 minutes..

Regarding other languages.. mm.. don't like.. can't think of any other. Ones I like:

Mandarin is kind of cool.. I like that shwa shwa shwa shwa with various tones to it.. shwa shwa shwa shwa.. I can entertain myself for hours mimicking the sounds.. shwa shwa shwa..

I also like Russian.. sounds so Latin sometimes.. or something.. has a nice sound to it..

I like Spanish and definetely love Brazilian-Portuguese.. particularly the music and songs.. However with Spanish it sounds better in different places.. I never really cared for the Mexican-Spanish sound.. I love however Colombian-Spanish more than any other Spanish I've ever heard.

Tiger,

How can you like the sound of Brasilian Portuguese? I know the women are HOT but the language is almost as whiny sounding as Korean!

As for the sound of English, I've always wondered about that? What does English sound like to a non native speaker? I guess a lot depends on what the listeners native language is.

I've asked Japanese and Korean students this before and the only answer I've ever gotten is 'COOL'!

My guess is that it sounds kind of bland. A mix between the sounds of German, Japanese and Swedish.

Does this make sense? Confused

Whiney? Nah, its as sexy as the women!! I love Brazilian-Portuguese.

Actually the whining you hear is a nasal sound of words like 'sao' as in 'sao paulo' and others.. and a few other vowel combinations.

I love Brazilian-Portuguese.. words like Caxambu (Ka-SHAM-boo) and muito (meaning very) you have to your mouth around these vowels.. and its just very pleasing to the ear.. there is also all kind of sounds like 'onge' sound like the word 'orange'.. and 'ongy' sounds and baixa and abacaxi and such.. I love those 'x' words and the 'j'-like sounding words that are peppered all over the language..

I love playing Brazilian music.. the language has this really soothing effect on me.. wow.. i'm missing it again.

Man, were on a totally different page here! I had some REALLY hot Brasilian students who were ready to do the nasty. I had a gf at the time so I didn't take it any further. However, if I was a single man, I would have let them suck me of just so I wouldn't have to hear them speak!!!

Spoken Brazilian-Portuguese is SEXY!!

Regarding Brazilians who speak English.. thats NOT sexy. I can't stand hearing them speak English.. because they put in some extra vowels and nasal some of the tones and stress the ends of words way too much. I really don't like when they speak English at all. Plus English words spoken with that accent just doesn't sound good. Brazilians should ONLY be speaking Portuguese.. as those vowels and sounds in Portuguese or beautiful only when speaking Portuguese.

Living in Brazil and hearing the Brazilian-Portuguese being spoken and the music and the songs. its totally totally totally different!! Totally different. Not even close. I love it.

I'd say Japanese people always sound as if they're angry.

Korean older generation seem to hawk and hiss a lot. Younger generation girls whine most but can't blame the language for that.

I have a theory about Koreans that explains nnoying whininess!! Korea is the most Confucianist country in the world, right? Well in Confucianist societies you never really grow up: you're a grown up to those younger than you but a baby to your seniors. Total contrast to most societies where, once a grown-up never again a kid. And kids whine. QED.

I can speak very little Korean, but when I do speak it I don't gesture like a Korean.
It drives me nuts when I see foreigners trying to act Korean.
Especailly when they move their chin up and forward and "uh uh....uh uh...uh uh".
