I like stuff from my time, my era. Late 80's, early 90's.
Not stuff from decades ago, before i was even born.
I'm not going to automatically hero worship something just because the older generation tells me I have to. Or because everyone else does. |

I'm surprised that so many teachers still play Beatles songs in the class.
Why play songs that were written forty years ago. I get students falling asleep when I use that tape from Edutainment. Put on Westlife My love and the kids love it. |

It's called being a non-conformist. It's just a phase he'll grow out of it.
My son came home with a mohawk once. I was really afraid until I realized it was just a phase. |

I'm no Beatles fan, but I'm surprised you would ask why play songs that were written forty years ago.
Why play Mozart?
Why watch movies that were made last year?
Why read books that were written before 2000?
Why look at a Picasso or Da Vinci? |

You misinterpreted what I said. When I use pop songs in the classroom why use something that was written before the kids were born. Then again I'm sure their Mums and Dads would love it.
Personally I think The Small Faces were underated. |

i'd take anyone to task if they criticized early beatles for being silly.
image, yes. i'll agree that was silly but it was pretty standard for the day, to have a hokey, saleable look attached to a band.
but the music - sometimes vacuous, silly pop - but played with heart by dudes who had paid their dues in shitty little bars.
i think the only good thing about macartney was that he was a jedi bass player who knew how to move a song with a bass line. he blatantly aped james jamerson, but there are worse bassists to copy.
and even though a great deal of the songs are about love, they're great lyrics. the guys could actually turn a phrase.
nobody has to hero worship it. i just have a strong feeling that any dislike for it is forced. i really can't believe that it's possible to dislike the beatles.
i'll watch at the next party we're all at. the guy who said he didn't like it - i'm going to be spying on you. you're going to be tapping your foot, and then i'm going to say "HA! POSER! YOU ACTUALLY DO LIKE THE BEATLES!" and the guy who tries to change the song with a scornful look on his face, well, i'm just going to eject you for overcompensating. |

They're all right I guess. I'd never listen to them voluntarily, but when it comes on the radio it's not torture or anything.

| Someone said in an earlier post that one of the Beatles records was the most important of the time or whatever. What does that mean? There was an advert for a Misson of Burma show and they called them the most important band to ever come out of Boston. I never got that. How can a band, record, song be important? How many laws did Crass change? None. How many wars has Bono ended? None. Music is just that, music. If you like it good for you, but no one cares. Everyone has a particular style of music they like and not every one thinks that _______ is the best band in the world. I hate certain types of music but I dont condem anyone if they like it. Waste of time. I'm not going to compare iPods, I'm not going to take your advice on the next big band. I have no trouble finding music. So go and listen to Deep Purple and Rod Stewart and have a good day. |

I love the Beatles. I've been listening to them since the womb, and never really thought much about them growing up because the music was always around me so long as I was in the house.
It wasn't until my late teens when I moved out that I started appreciating the music in a real way. I found I needed to play them to get to sleep sometimes, or just as ambience when I was doing whatever inside.
So yes, maybe it's more nostalgia than anything but I really love the Beatles. |

The Beatles rock. Dear Prudence is still an awesome song 40 years on. Same for Come Together, While my Guitar Gently Weeps and many others.

It looks like I've at last found someone sane.
I never liked any of the above. beatles music always seemed silly, like sort of fairground music. Their image was equally stupid to my mind.
Led Zepellin I always disliked. However I do like some of the solo stuff Robert Plant has done recently. Pink Floyd was lame. Just another brick in the wall. Pathetic, droning music.Vegans?? Give me a break.
The whole scene is a jumble of immature bored suburban europeans in fancy dress finding a way to think they are important. |

I actually think punk had much more of a positive influence than the
Beatles. I can remember going to school from 1978-1988. Things were much more oppressive then.There was a lot to fights . These were considered post hippy days and if the hippies had actually accomplished anything things should have been better.
You could literally get punched out if someone didn't like the way you looked. If you spoke your mind in school you would get a bloody good hiding from your classmates. Conformity was much more of a problem back then. I had tons of friends who got punched out for looking punk, although they weren't even punks. Racism, Sexism, and Homophobia were much more prevalent then and guess what? It was the fans of mainstream Rock like Led Zeppelin ,and Pink Floyd, that were instigating all this violence and hate.
The Kids these days have it much better than we had it. Although the music comming out is mostly rubbish. |
