I've currently got a jailbroken 1.14 and am very happy with it. The community apps are great. I'm not going to switch unless there is a free ebook reader like ruBooks in the app store. Anyone know if there is?

There is a book reader called Bookshelf. It's $9.95. It's ok, it's not a noticeable improvement over the previous one I was using, Books, but it works fine.

I still have my old G4 20GB ipod...goes well, does its job well...play and store music.

I wouldnt consider ungrading to a touch or iphone for a few years yet.
Remember the first generation ipod - they were PIECES OF SHITe - id prefer to wait for a few m,ore generations, by which time id say the touch will be all but gone and the iphone will pretty much take over as it does everything and more....Plus these days the memory size is WAY too small to be very useful.

In the mean time ill use my PSP for movies, GAMES, internet browsing, ebooks etc.....only thing it lacks is the GPS function....

bring on the iPhone G5...by then maybe the still and video features will be worth something rather than just a crappy novelty.

I)Can be used as a PDA
J)CAN FIT IN YOUR POCKET

The Samsung YP-P2 is the shit, yo.

A)Music
B)Videos (spelled correctly this time)
C) over 3 inch screen
D) has bluetooth instead of Wi-fi, making it easy to transfer files between your phone, your mp3 player and your computer
E) you can use your mp3 player to answer your phone
F) can read e-books
G) comes with a Korean-English dictionary
H) no remote feature. that's kinda cool.
I) same
J) smaller than the Itouch
K) costs less. updates are free, and every firmware introduces some awesome new feature to play with. Check out the wikipedia article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YP-P2

I mean, it's just awesome. that's it. Awesome.

***EDIT*** The crappy Samsung software that comes with it can be flushed down the toilet with the rest of your crap. Included in this, sadly, is the ability to convert videos. When it works, they are beautiful, but it's very touchy about what it considers a VIDEO. A worthless program that makes an awesome toy a little less awesome.

gps function on the touch is coming.

touchmods is a group of devs that have created a voip for the touch (you have to buy a $40 mic from them). they're next project is a gps system for the touch. i believe they're in the process of building the gps hardware right now.

Sorry, I just have a general rule to never buy a gadget that has pee-pee as part of it's name.

In all seriousness, that was on my list last year, but the screen was a deal breaker. It's just a bit too small. Actually, the touch is pushing it, but I can live with it because it's about as large as you can get and still fit in your pocket.

Apple products might not be perfect, but for the price, they're hard to beat. They're especially great if you already have a Mac, as they all interface very nicely with each other. I couldn't ever go back to using a Windows PC after owning a MacBook for over a year. The OS is just so much nicer, smoother, more intuitive, reliable, and the design is sexy as hell.

Because of this, I'm stuck using iPods, but I really have no problem with that, because iPods are excellent little machines.

To the OP, I agree it's messed up for Apple to charge for the upgrade, but it's understandable that they wouldn't charge iPhone users for it, because iPhone users are already paying $70+ a month for the service, a good chunk of which goes to Apple in one way or another.

I agree with the first part, but I don't agree with paying for updates. Maybe if it is a major update, then sure, you can charge a same price.

However, if they were going to have another update within a matter of months, then Apple should not be double charging. they should've given the January update people the newest update free of charge.

$299 gets me the iPhone 3G, pretty much the coolest hand held device available. $250 gets an 80 GB iPod that plays video. Might not be the cheapest 80 GB MP3 player, but it's made by Apple, and that means it's a quality device.

As for their Macs, you can get comparatively specced PCs for slightly lower, but guess what? You're running Windows on it (unless you're a Linux geek; different story). To me, running OS X is priceless. I'd gladly pay an extra couple hundred dollars for the privilege of running OS X over Windows. So have fun with your Dell or HP or whatever PC you prefer. Ever since I switched to Mac in '05 I haven't looked back.

Didn't Apple make half a billion ipods that went bust? And you had to mail them back to get yourself a brand-new ipod? How is that a "quality product"? I think Apple has shown that they value INNOVATION over quality. They make the newest shiny devices, but that does not mean they are quality products.

Apple has a history of releasing cutting edge devices that later turn out to be flops. (Newton, anyone?)

Nobody's perfect. Every company has had some sort of quality issues. Dell's exploding batteries, anyone? At least Apple goes the extra mile in innovation and creativity. Seriously. Fuckin iPhone 3G!!!

Computers can be sexy in the same way cars can be sexy. It's a figure of speech used to describe something with superb engineering and form factor. Macs fit the bill. Plus, I like to *beep* mine.

You can try Jetaudio or GOM encoder.
