What?
I had my guitar shipped here from NY, just have a declared value written on the package slip. When it arrived, they just held it at customs, sent a letter with a phone number to call, after they confirmed it isn't raw money, they ship it to you the next day. No extra charges. |

I'd look on e-bay. You can find some pretty good deals there. I picked up a 2002 D-28 for $1,300 a couple of years ago.
As for cheap-but-quality-sounding guitars, I recommend Mr. Potato in Songtan (right outside Osan Airbase). I bought an acoustic there last year for 200,000 but it sounds like an $800 guitar...it rivals my brother's Taylor. He builds all of his own guitars and they sound great. Highly recommended! |

there is a store in nakwon which specializes in high end guitars.
specifically, they carry martins and larrivees.
i bought a d-9 larrivee for 2,300,000 won which is under the retail suggested price ($2,598) but much higher than what you'd actually find in stores back in the states.
it came out to about 15-20% above what you might pay at a store back home.
but i am from nyc and with the sales tax consideration the difference became less painful to bear. it's a sweet players' guitar!
i recommend you go to the store in nakwon and try out their stuff, especially the larrivees. |
Thanks for the info. Good choice with the Larrivee. Surprised to hear you found one in Korea.
Can you provide any information about the store/vacinity? Some directions or landmarks would be appreciated.
Thanks |

Sorry. Good prices, terrible odds. I need to play the guitar first. No two are alike.

If the guitar you're looking at is 30 or 40% more expensive, rest assured that the guv'mint is getting 20% |
So let me get this straight. A country that manages to place illegals into public schools cant get a guitar or two past customs? Please. That 20% finds its way to the same place my medical insurance and pension payments do-- into the pockets of some greedy business owner.

Guy I'm telling you... check out this site! Why piss your hard earned money away?!
With a simple twist of the MODEL SELECT knob, you'll hear a diverse range of instruments from no-frills workhorses to the upper echelons of collectibility. And a few exotic oddities that most of us don't even know how to tune, much less play. With the Variax Acoustic, you won't get the vintage patina or the strangely erotic musty case smell, but you won't have to deal with the neck re-sets and cracked tops either. Instead, you get only the very best part: the sound.

Even the pros are taking these on the road now. I have one of their POD XT's and it is every amp/pedal combe you could ever want!! I did the research and by far these guys have all our needs figured out!! God I should be a saleman for this company!!!
Ultimately you will do whatever you deem proper. However don't cheat yourself if you just want to be 'cool' cuz you have an authentic Martin. Read the detalis on the site. You will be surprised!! |

Thanks. They sound great but I'm looking for a full bodied acoustic guitar... not a computer with a piece of wood attached to it. |

This is Korea. Anything like musical instruments made in the States or elsewhere will cost twice as much.
I went to Nakwon and saw a Warwick Bass. I asked to play it, the man said no, that I might break it. "What? I've been playing bass since before you knew how to use a cash register homie. Let me test this out, I might buy it."
So he reluctantly let's me test the thing out, he plugs it in, but when I am playing it, he keeps his hand on the head of it and his other hand on the body. After a minute of slapping the shit out of it he freaks out and says "no no no no no," then he turns the amp off.
I asked him how much it costed and he said "3, no, 4 thousand, no 5 thousand..."
"Million," I said,
"5 million won. It is too expensive for you."
So I got up walked out, went to a pc bang, looked the SAME bass up on the internet, and it came to about 800.00 Euros.
*beep* Nakwon. That place is a rip off, and unless you plan on buying something used, spend your money elsewhere.
It would make more sense to take a trip to Nazareth Pennsylvania, about a half hour drive north of Philadelphia, and visit the Martin Factory and buy one directly from them, then come back and Enjoy your new guitar. You might come out on top, despite the astronomical prices of airfare these days. |

Wow, that's just ridiculous! I mean, do they even want to sell any of their guitars? There's a music store in Songtan that has the same attitude. They act like it's a chore for them to have to sell you something. I've never seen any store so reluctant to take someone's money.
One of my coworkers was looking at Taylors online yesterday. For a 714CE, which averages around $2,500 back home, they were charging 4.7 million won! He said he's going to China over vacation because he can buy it for 2 million won there. So maybe China is an option...but then, how can you be sure you'll really be getting an authentic guitar? |

That's why you want to play em first... If it you like it, buy it.
I personally couldn't care less if it's a ripoff if it sounded and played the same as the real thing. I think the odds of a chinese ripoff playing like a 700 series taylor are slim to none though. |
