I believe it isn't even a question of religion in any form, because deception is deception. If you are purporting to provide a service, i.e. "free English lessons," then that is what you should do and not bother to bring in some hidden agenda into the picture. Sure the people with a religious worldview have a goal and purpose to spread their message, but they transgress their own beliefs by going to people under the guise of "teaching" when they want to do nothing more than tell others about their religious beliefs. From a Christian perspective, deceit is sin just as much as any other sin identified by any religious organization IMHO.
If you are going to lie and deceive people about supposedly giving them "free English lessons," then what else are you going to lie and deceive people about? To me, trusting these people ends the moment they step foot into the situation, because their motives for providing their "services" are neither pure or honest. I have had plenty of people, foreign and Korean who wanted to be "my friend" here in this country who were simply trying to invite me to some "special meeting" at their church. No thanks. |

^ This kinda reminds me of an experience I had as a university student. One day after finishing my last class around noon time I had some time to walk around and when I passed around some picnic tables there were a lot of young people (uni freshman and some local HS kids) grilling burger patties and in front of the whole thing was a huge sign : FREE HAMBURGERS. And there was no line. When I stood there curiously gawking like a dork at all of the hubbub the oldest gentleman (obese mustached fellow with a big smile sunglasses and a mullet tucked under a baseball cap; the chief I supposed) said, "Welcome! There are lots of free hamburgers! Help yourself! Feeling a bit hungry, free was free. So I sat down at an empty picnic table eating and wondering why nobody is flocking to these tables. About 5 minutes pass by until one of the guys decides to sit in front of me and asks me how the food is, how my classes are going, and after all of the formal introductions comes the kicker:
"So . . . . have you heard from the Word of God lately?"
I was held up for 45 minutes forcing fake grimaces and meaninglessly nodding to everything he was saying. I finished my burger in under 10 minutes. It was torture. I saw some of my friends in the distance passing by smiling and laughing at me because I fell for it. I was preached to while I ate. Cruel.
"They got you!" They said.
Free hamburgers? Free English lessons? Nothing is ever free. Nothing. |

I think a whole lotta of ya are confusing the Mormon Missionaries with Religious based Hagwons or Hagwons with religious owners.
Way back 2001 I met a couple from the States. Both Christian(non Mormon) and nice not all fired up. They where teaching at a local hagwon a getting paid about half of what I was getting for more work then I was doing. The school did English with a religious bent. That was the rip is got somebody coming with good intentions and paying them crap and then profiting off it. I felt this couple should have got a normal job and paid a reg wage and then work at an orphanage in the mean time.
I remember some of the old Hagwon ads from a few years back looking for Christians and then looking at the pay wage and see it either 1/2 or 2/3 or the prevailing wage. Just looked at the Job board looks like most Christian school now paying normally
Or some idealistic Christian enrolls in some like minded school and then getting royally ass rammed because they are Christian. Yep you will be living with the owner in a small room. We will get along great. Did I mention more work hours hey this is for the good of the school and Jesus. I am sorry to have hurt you hey turn the other cheek. So they can hit you again. Going to a school and expecting Christian behavior and getting the devil instead.

A local church offers people cookies when they walk by. I always refuse. I have no problem with their belief but I do not want to be preached at. I don't accept their cookie because I have no intention of listening to their spiel (sp?) |
