I am going to the Netherlands in two weeks. Hotel prices are astronomical. Youth hostels are cool, but I don't want to stay in one. I've done enough Youth Hostelling. I want to stay somewhere a bit nicer with more privacy.

I have been in touch with a guy in Amsterdam who has advertised his flat for vacation rental. It is a fairly good deal I think, 65 Euro right smack in the middle of the Dam. It's a one room studio apt, all the amenities, full kitchen, towels, bedding, wireless internet.

He wants me to pay up front for 6 nights, with a 100 Euro Deposit as well. 490 Euro altogether, getting back 100 at the end of my stay.

What do you think? Sound legit?

I don't want to piss on your bonfire but I have heard of people getting very screwed in these types of deals (not in Amsterdam, I have to say but in Nice and Berlin).

Personally, I'd be wary of paying so much up front. Can you negotiate to pay the deposit and the rest once you get there, get the keys and establish it is actually his flat?!

There must be agent sites that deal with this kind of rental and I'd rather go through an agent and have some kind of come-back to an established company. Private rentals can be brilliant when they work but there's no way to get your money back if it all goes wrong.

I agree with the above poster.

I would not recommend paying for rent/housing in advance when not dealing with a company.

Did he mention that he'd be staying with you? I'd bring some KY Jelly just in case...

Staying in Amsterdam wasn't too expensive actually. I was there June 2007 and stayed at a 2 bed hotel room about a block from Anne Frank's House for $45 Euro a night.
