I am going to a school who is going to pay me back for the flight two weeks after I get there. Does this sound Kosher?

Well, it seems alright, but why don't you push for prepaid? My school will prepay for me if I make a reservation through Korean Air from Bangkok.

I think reimbursement is the norm as far as airfares go.

They don't like forking out up front in case the FT changes their mind and pulls a no-show, leaving the school out of pocket.

I straight up told them I couldnt afford to pay my own flights... even though it was a little lie! But Ive heard too many times of people not being reimbursed...

They said 2 weeks after you arrive, I wouldnt leave it any longer than what they promised.

I'd get the ticket prepaid. But be sure it's a definite go before your new boss buys the thing.

If you come all the way over on your own dime and then don't get reimbursed, what will you do? Quit? You'll then have to go back home...on your own dime. Don't put yourself over a barrel. Let the outfit take the risk. You assume a lot of risk as it is by hiring on with an employer you've never met who is also very far away from you.

Wario's school tried this, but this is where mom put her foot down. I had been fully supportive of this whole adventure up to the point where the recruiter suggested we book the flight and pay upfront.

Whoa Nelly.... One of the drawing points to this job was the free travel and I meant to hold them to that point in the contract. Plus I'd already been investigating flight costs and knew this wasn't going to be as cinchy as it had once been six-ten years ago. Picking the best price meant looking at dozens of flights and I just didn't want to pay for it--and risk screwing something up and getting burned for the plane fare. Untangling that mess isn't something I wanted to be responsible for. That's what travel agents are for, let their's do it.

I can see their point though, that they could get burned easily enough with no-shows. Eventually, his recruiter and I established a rapport, I let him know that I was putting my trust in him (first born son, all that hokey) and they had the school book the flights and paid for the tickets.
