Today in the diner I saw on the news something strange.

It was a report showing that the names "Sea of Korea" and "East Sea" prdate the use of "Sea of Japan"...

...On early European maps!

This is like Mohawk and Huron Indians arguing over what Champlaign called them. Why would they care what the early European explorers called the sea? Is the perceptions of European visitors more important to them than their own language? Geez!

That'll show those Japanese!
It just might show them... it just might

I think the Japanese are doing this for giggles. Really this is a joke on the Koreans

Korea is like that little kid in school that goes mental when somebody calls him a name. They rant and rage, Jump up and down. Scream and throw a temper tantrum. Best show in the school for saying one word.

Wow, you are describing one of my students "Kelly" perfectly!

The Korean Embassy takes it seriously. Just saw this link on their US site:

Quote:
Our Love for Dokdo

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea (ROK) in the United States has produced a new map of Korea entitled Our Love for Dokdo which is on display at the Korean Information Service. The map provides correct information about the exact location of the Dokdo islets in the East Sea and demonstrates that they are Korean territory. It also features a variety of wild flowers and birds native to Dokdo, a treasure chest of flora and fauna.

Where did you read that? Anyway, this whole Dokdo Island thing is just to distract the people. It's the wag the dog kind of thing.

I don't think you're that far from the truth. Maybe the government is hoping the people will forget about the American beef issue and unite over Dokdo. Sometimes I think the Korean people are like a buncha blind sheep...so easily manipulated.

Though to be fair, I also know lotsa Koreans who said they'll eat American beef and don't give a rat's ass about Dokdo.

It is not just about the American beef thing. A South Korean was shot by the North Koreans and Hyundai Asan's business could get hit, and the president likes those Hyundai Asan guys, and he has had many embarassments. The Left used nationalism against him, and now he used it to distract the people. The Japanese didn't write that book last week.

This situation was just exploited to fool the people. [u][b]It is one of the oldest tricks in the books.

There is some mention in Hamels journal of an ongoing dispute over an island between Japan and Korea. It may have been Ulleungdo (Matsushima).

I have heard and seen similar numbers as mentioned above. I think that the life expectancy in 1910 (or 1905) in "Korea" was:

- men 24 years
- women 27 years

If I remember correctly, the life expectancy rose to 45 years by the end of the colonial period in 1945. I am sorry but I can't remember the name of the book/article that mentioned these numbers. Was it in Cumming's Korea's Place in the Sun? Not sure.

Could that figure really be true I wonder? If so, that's such a ridiculously low life expectancy. Shocked Laughing

Like, really that's just plain sad.

I think there's no debate that the Japanese introduced better plumbing. Clean water is one of the major contributors to the increase in human life expectancy.

Government Plans to Build Hotel on Dokdo
Donga.com (July 21, 2008)

Quote:
In a bid to protect South Koreas sovereignty over the Dokdo islets, the government and the ruling Grand National Party (GNP) decided to actively enhance habitability of the islets by, for example, building a marine hotel....

Measures to enhance habitability of the Dokdo islets include building a marine hotel and a comprehensive marine base, ensuring accessibility of citizens, creating a permanent residential village and a Dokdo experience center, and building a Dokdo museum in the Seoul metropolitan area.

They also agreed to develop diverse tourism projects and form a mineral research team. The ruling party also suggested dispatching the Marine Corps instead of the police to beef up security on the islets

Well they are. Fishing rights for starters. And possibly gas deposits.

But they thought it would be a good idea to make note that Takeshima is Japan's in teachers' curriculum manuals?

This is a non sequitur. I choose not to guess your point, thanks.

Good, but it does follow. I don't see why Korea should be quiet on this when Japan still makes moves towards Dokdo. If it were a non-issue, Japan would formally renounce all claims.

Nah, it doesn't.

It's the principle of the matter, obviously. Korea doesn't deserve those rocks.

Well, if you've lived here for any length of time, you know that EVERYTHING is Japan's fault. Well, not all...some of it is America's as well.

From the Chosun Ilbo

Weather Authority Clueless Amid Torrential Rains

The Korea Meteorological Agency has been making wrong predictions for the four weekends since June 29, not for the first time inviting public distrust of the weather authority.

The KMA and weather experts say the fault does not lie with [their computers]: the second supercomputer at the KMA is a world-class model. Instead, the problem is with the software, a numerical weather prediction model. The software on the supercomputer is outdated, but there has been a lack of efforts to upgrade it for several years, said a KMA official. The model currently used by the KMA was imported from Japan in 1991.
