Has to be Maradonna.

Cryuff, Zidane, Platini, Best, Di Stefano, Charlton(bobby), Pele(and a whole host of other brazilians), baggio(not dino)...and a load of people I'm forgetting would have to be in the conversation....but Maradonna...

..say the 'hand of god' to almost anyone on this planet and they will know immediately what you are talking about...then you will both talk lovingly about the 'other goal' in that game, which is maybe the greatest of all time.

Personally I think the only really honest way to choose these things is to make a team. Here is my greatest of all time team..3-1-4-1-1 is the formation

Keeper....Packie Bonner^^
centre back: maldiniz
centre back: baresi
centre back: moore
holding midfielder: beckenbauer
left wing: rivelino
midfielder: Zico
midfielder: Best
right wing: Jairzinho
no 10:Maradonna
Striker: pele

tell the wingers to hug the sidelines and let franz spray the ball about.

Where the hell is Craig Bellamy?

I don't think I would select one player who was the best. There are too many players who were excellent. I have watched black-and-white footage of the old Brazilian giants, and Pele certainly was magnificent. Maradonna was good, but I don't believe he did as well as Pele, and I say that as someone who saw footage of both of them. Zico was as good as Maradonna, but he had leave soccer too early due to injuries. One of Pele's teammates Tostao was such a fabulous player, and people don't remember him.

If you see old footage with Tostao, you will see so many goals Pele scored wouldn't have been possible without Tostao. He was an amazing player as well. Of course, you had Bobby Charlton who was very good. It is generally hard to choose, but I think Pele was very artistic in his play, made amazing goals and was an excellent dribbler, and he reached stardom at age 17. Who can really beat that?

We can't forget other greats like Johann Kruyk, Beckenbauer. Rossi was definitely good, but he wasn't as consistent as say Pele. Pele was consistently brilliant. Pele for a long time was known as the king of soccer and for many good reasons. Pele was before my time, but I would say Pele. Zidane is definitely a versatile, good player. There was also a great Hungarian player called Puskas. He was supposed to be a stellar star in the old days. He died recently, and people mentioned it on Dave's ESL. May he rest in peace. My father loved watching him. People didn't mention Rod Gullet. He was very good.

I still remember the quote about Barry Sanders' dad telling him he'd never be as good as Jim Brown. Very Happy

Michael Laudrup was a big deal in the 80's and early 90's. Probably one of the most unselfish players ever, he created about 80% of all the goals in all the matches he played.
