On my last flight to Dubai there were several stunning looking Russian ladies who were obviously not going there to teach English. They were totaly hot and available for a small price. They have a famous disco/hotel
known as The Swiss hotel. Not to be confused with The Swiss Grand in Seoul. It has one disco that has Russian ladies, Another disco that has Filipino and another with Indian ladies. You stop in pretty much any of the so called disco's and order a drink and watch the ladies bellydance.
For a small fee you can rent them out for the night.

There's no stoning. The authorities tend to turn a blind eye to this. Their not as extreme as in Saudi Arabia. As a result they have all kinds of freelance prostitution. You also don't need to bother with the so called drinking licence. I was never asked to show it in any of the bars. You only need it to bring alcohol to your home.

Dubai is awesome. For instance there are a number of jewellery shops in Deira that cater almost exclusively to Russians with only Russian signs.

Not quite Pattaya - but the number of Russian working girls is certainly going up in Dubai.

I am flying through Dubai in August, and can stay there with a stop over if I like. I had not thought of staying there, as I understood it was expensive, and hot.
Is it worth while to stay there for a few days? Where to stay, what to see, and hum...the swiss hotel?
My ex was from the Ukraine, east European women are very good looking.

I agree with bucheon bum: Dubai is certainly well worth a visit.

And if you can get a good-paying ESL job there (eg. with HCT), you might find that you'd want to return to work. By my estimation, the UAE's basic ESL teacher salary would be more than ROK's (tho' there'd be more outside income potential in Korea) and the level of accomodation much better, but I'd save a lot less: way too many temptations to spend! If interested, consider applying now, asking potential employers for an on-site August interview - if anyone's around to interview you: expats clear off in the summer!

Do not take lightly b/bum's description of the heat - it will be way too hot to walk barefoot on the beach during the day in August. In Dubai, even mad dogs and Englishmen do NOT go out in the midday summer sun... tho' a 7pm-ish sunset swim can be pleasant - try Jumeirah Beach. (Winter weather, however, is just-right cool).

And plan your trips within the city accdg to Dubai's horrenduous traffic jams - I know a high income expat who now refuses to consider working in Dubai becuse of its traffic.

There are comfortable inter-city mini buses (for US $20 or so, if memory serves me right), to other UAE cities like Abu Dhabi and Al-Ain; both 2-3 hrs one way. There are also the more-expensive shared or private taxis; negotiated prices can make them quite attractive as you'd be able to get a tailor-made route.

"The Hotel Florida in Deira (in Dubai)...there's a dirt cheap city bus that goes from the airport direct to the Al Sabkha bus station (which is across the street from The Florida)...
I did a quick check of their rooms (ahead of a future visit to Dubai), and I would have taken one because of the low price (US $ 50?) but what I saw was barely acceptable comfort wise.

In regards to the Hotel FL and the bus, yes, take the bus, but I'd advise passing on the Hotel FL. I remember checking that place out, and it wasn't so hot. The two that I mentioned are no more than a 5 minute walk away. Unfortunately I do not remember their names. There are other hotels in the area too. No need to make a reservation in advance (especially in August), so maybe just plan to check out a few in the area.

I'm interested in going to Dubai for the winter, with a side trip to Egypt or whatever else takes my fancy. I heard there are hotels near some creek, which is worth exploring. How close are the beaches from the city center. I was thinking of going to Oman, too. Any recommendations? I like cultural stuff, archetecture and the like, markets and beaches! I'm female, by the way.

Dubai has next to no culture - a fairly poor museum and some renovated traditional buildings are about as old school as it gets. The cheaper areas (around the Creek) are far more sub-continent in atmosphere than Middle Eastern. Oman feels much more like Arabia and is much more beautiful, as is Yemen. I have lived in Dubai since 2005 (with a year in HK in between) and essentially its just a great place to make money, and a good base - with Africa, the rest of the Middle East and Central Asia quite close. Europe and SE Asia 6/7 hours away too.
The nightlife is not bad, although everything shuts at 3am. Also there are more than 10,000 air hostesses living in the city which has its advantages:)

Well I drink Stella!
There are lots of hotels around the Creek, mainly on the Deira (airport side) that are reasonably priced. You can also live quite cheap in the old part of Dubai as there is lots of great Indian/Pakistani/Iranian places that the workers use. If you had a bit of cash, you could get a longstay in one of these cheap hotels and use Air Arabia to fly to other regional places for long weekends etc. I visited Ethiopia and Kurdistan in the last 6 weeks and going to Peshawar in 4 weeks. Next year have plans for Iran/India/Syria and Kuwait. Also planning to fly to Asmara in Eritrea, go overland to Djibouti and get a dhow to Aden in Yemen. Met a guy who runs a lodge in Ethiopia who did the same journey in 1957! The closeness of so many interesting/affordable countries is what makes Dubai a good place to live imo.
