Hi,

Looking for suitable suggestions for areas of an English zone.
It is for an elementary school.

The 4 areas will be for:reading, writing, seaking and listening.

Any help in making names for a sign for each area will be glady appreciated.

'Homelife' is a good one.

I've seen Hospital, Art Room, Restaurant, Shop, Airport, but never a 'Homelife' theme area in an English Zone.

But maybe I live a sheltered existence.

If I were an English language hunting Korean nerd, though, I'd appreciate the variety of activities that go on in a home. It's where we spend most of our time, besides work.

Hobbies, using a clothes washer, putting $ in a piggybank, sweeping the stairs, taking out the garbage, feeding the dog, removing cat poop from the kitty litter box, running the dishwasher, hanging up laundry to dry, etc.

The school I am teaching at also wanted to start an English Zone, but nobody had a clue what it was or where to start.

Can you please let me know where I can find information how to start an English Zone?

The last school I was at spent 70m and chose 1 of many companies out there, which they believed offered the best package.
An idea would be to look at other schools in your area and what they have done.
My last one was brilliant, touch screen monitor for the class and it was a well laid out room with a book cafe, restaurant and department store for kids to play and practice English.

So far for my op, I have thought of "Tell me" for the speaking section. "Hear me" for the listening section with "Write me" and "Book cafe/corner" for the reading section.

Can someone tell me what exactly an "English Zone" is? I figure it is some addition to an English school which incorporates role playing.

J, for some reason my pub elem school, and two others in this small city of 50,000, is suddenly getting an Eng Zone. There's a kindy building which runs one kindy class. Two other rooms are empty. The two empty rooms will be transformed with building renovations into an English Zone.

An Eng Zone is like an English Village. Mock ups of theme rooms (airport, restaurant, etc. ) to role play everyday activities in a far off, Eng speaking land that is not Korea. TALK program FTs and a Kcoteacher (K uni student) are contracted ( 6 mos or 1 year) to teach the kids there.

The kids are from outlying elem schools and come in 'lots', afterschool. They are brought in by bus and run thru the curriculum/activities getting the whole tour, class by class. This takes a few days. Then a new 'lot' of kids comes in and the process repeats itself.

It's kind of boring for the FT because it's the same lesson (airport, restaurant, etc) but to different kids, over and over. I did it for 6 weeks last Summer working all day. Doing it for 6 months to a year will no doubt be zombiefying for the FT. But I've heard the TALKers will only work 3 hours a day so that's ok.

The English Village concept has been discussed on Dave's and the consensus seems to be it's effectiveness is overestimated by the Korean Education system.

The best English zone names usually come from department store sales. Power English Zone is a good one. Also, Happy English Zone must be used. Best English is always good. Just replace the word "sale" with "English" and you've got zones that will make Koreans proud.
