i had this discussion with my korean co-workers the first year i was in korea. someone came into my apartment while i was home and attacked me. i wound up beating the shit out of him and stealing his glasses, but i was pretty shook up. when i told my Kco-worker that i had initially thought of grabbing one of the knives left in the kitchen sink to protect myself during the ordeal, they informed me that it would have been a VERY BAD situation FOR ME if i had harmed him in any way. they spoke with some of the local police and, apparently, because my door was left unlocked, i could have been blamed for "inviting" the guy in. if i had actually hurt him in any way, i would have been liable for it. |

I would suggest you talk to someone who actually knows the laws. |

Not if you injure the other guy, no.
There is NO right to defend yourself in Korea. If you defend yourself, to the point where you come out on top and the other guy is injured, YOU will be the one booked for assault. Oh yeah, and you can expect to pay blood money to the injured party, too.
In Korea, the rule is: least injured is most guilty. |

Run like the wind if you get into it with someone. If you must, take care of your business quickly and get out. I personally have never been threatened enough in Korea to feel like I might have to fight, but be gone in a New York second if you're in an altercation. |

^ Good advice, dat. But in your own house, where can you go? I ain't runnin'. And even if I wanted to, it's an eleven floor drop out the back. And, let's say you do pummel this home-invader; what do you do afterwards? dump his sorry ass out in the hallway? When/if the cops show up, deny he ever was in your house, and say it wasn't you who did it? I don't imagine too many burglers want to confess to entering (breaking in or no). But... this is Korea.
Remember, always lock your door! |

^ not really something to laugh about, but yes. when i gouged at his eyes, i got a souvenir. thought the glasses might help whoever find the guy (too many episodes of CSI on replay), since i think he lived in the same apartment complex. as to the flack about locking the door: i had literally just walked into my apartment after a shopping trip. surprise! visitor, wanted or not, appeared. (he had spotted me outside and followed me back to my place.) considered jumping off the balcony, but was more inclined to fight. what do you do when/after someone comes into your place and attempts to do dirty things to you (when you're definitely not in the mood)? beat them up, scream bloody murder, and chase them out of the building with a blunt object. just remember folks: don't use said object under any circumstances. it is purely ornamental. self defense, my ass. |

Yes, well, I was speaking generally. For waegs, it's even worse, as you say. Gives new meaning to the expression "hit and run".
If you're ever in an altercation, NEVER stick around to give a statement to the cops, not even if you were the most injured. You will be seen as automatically guilty because witnesses will come out of the woodwork against you. Any altercation is the time to leg it.
Back to the question of someone in my own home, I would take him out anyway. Knock him down long enough to immobilize him for the police to pick him up. |

you don't have any rights here in the first place

is actually hospitality. but we foreigners don't understand korean culture and mistake it for hostility. after all, both words start with 'hos' and koreans do make a lot of spelling errors (sometimes)

If you're attacked, the main thing is to get out of there ASAP. Even if the Korean attacks you and you don't even throw a punch, you're still nothing but a lowly non-Korean and will be at fault. |
