Something came in the mail two days ago that I wasn't expecting. It was my voting package for the upcoming election. Being on an F-5 visa gives me the right to vote.
There are two candidates, (1) had a nice flyer with the usual unrealistic posing with students in the faked 'we're so happy' pictures that give the image of a great man, when in reality we know is very different. One picture caught my eye in his pamphlet, he proudly displayed a picture of himself protesting BEEF!
I thought to myself. "There is no chance in hell I'm gonna vote for anyone stupid enough to protest Amercian beef." So I made up my mind to vote for (2) who is less experienced, but at least not stupid enough to put protesting US beed in his flyer as a key point to support him.
Yeah right. . . .
Even sadder, (1) was a former principal, a former teacher & has extensive experience in the eduation bureaucracy. The very type of person who is the cause of so many problems with corruption & incompetence. I actually have a say in keeping someone like that out of office.
I'm going to LOVE the expression on the voting booth worker's face when I show up to vote.

Great to hear Chicken, finally being able to "give back" in a small yet effective way. Too bad there were not more people with a voice to let your choices help make the difference. I am on my F5, but I suppose elections are only for those who have been on the F5 for a period of time. Please correct me if I am wrong on this. Thanks |

Politicians will always play to voters' sympathies.....in any country.
William Hague (former tory party leader in the UK) pretty much based his entire election campaign on one slogan - "Keep The Pound". UK voters had a little bit more savy than he (or his campaign manager) gave them credit for.
Koreans, on the other hand, will fall for the anti-US-beef shenanigans hook, line and sinker. |

The beef is not 30 months old.
The cattle from which the beef is slaughtered is 20 plus months old if it has a "B" rating but is less than 30 months old.
Grade "A" beef is from cattle slaughtered at 20 months or less having the weight of an adult.
Korean beef cattle can slaughtered from retired milk cows well in excess of 30 months old.
Downer cows are also slaughtered for beef in Korea.
You may ask; What are Korean Beef Standards and Quality Grades?
Korean standards will be instituted shortly.
I find that Korea will benefit from the Mad Cow demos not because of restricting US Beef but from coming to the realization that the Domestic Beef industry is in a real need for some Standardization and oversight. |

UM not to beat a dead horse (or cow) but aren't the protests more than just the possibility of getting "Mad Cow's"? Isn't the real issue more about the political breakdown, deterioration and corruption of the current administration that surreptitiously allows US imports after a few nudges from the Bush administration? After all, Korea is the US third largest customer...and losses amount to over $4 billion...
To be fair though, i think there is quite a bit of over reaction on the part of the Korean public, and there were some compromises put into place - but i think this may have just been the straw that broke the camels back. It's not a surprise given the low approval rating of the current administration. |

Mr. Chicken,
I don't blame you for feeling that way. The really odd thing though is the fact that you actually worked with #1. That's a funny coincidence. |

I don't mind people protesting. That's their right to express their displeasure with their politicians. However, these protests come literally AFTER the last major election. 2MB hasn't had much time to do anything & was willing to do alot to change things in this country both for better & for worse.
What disgusts me about these rallies are that they are not really about 'beef' but more for their own special interests. They use them as a guise to gain legitimacy & people know it. The fact that this man who is in the education field was protesting beef really pisses me off. Educators are supposed to teach the truth, without bias & give a clear sense of reality. When it broke that the 'beef' protest complaints were mostly faked by a TV program, they still were protesting. Similar to our recently infamous geneticist who fooled the world for a short time. There are people in Korea today will still support him because of his nationality alone. I find this increadibly both short sighted & frightning. As time has passed during my time here, I do not really consider the avg person's opinions to hold much merit or consideration since too many times people base their actions on greed, emotion or nationalism rather than what is truthful or the right thing to do.
The fact that this man used bad facts & knowledge to protest something that wasn't really the reason for the protest shows me he's just a fake politician who's willing to kiss up to whoever will vote for him. In this case, it's the mob mentality.
We do NOT need people like that in positions of power. Hence I won't vote for him.
Hope that clears it up.

Lotteria is in on the mad cow protest--or at least responding to it.
When I made a carry-out order today, I found this printed on the bags:
호주청정우
롯데리아 수고기는 청정지역으로 유명한 호주 자연환경에서
자라 철저하고 까다로운 품질관리를 통해 생산된 호주청정우입니다.
100% 한우
롯데리다의 한우불고기버거는 농협에서 직접 공급받고 국가
공인가관에서 한우고기 DNA판정 결과를 받은 100% 대한미국 한우만 사용합니다.
I hope my translation at least comes close:
Pure Australian Beef
Lotteria's beef is pure Australian beef from Australia's famous natural environment
and which was produced under strict quality control.
100% Korean Beef
For Lotteria's Korean Bulgogiburgers, we use only 100% Korean beef which we receive directly
from the Farmer's Coop and which has been DNA tested. |
