A village? That'll be tough. To qualifiy as a village, it must have...
access to fresh water, at least one foriegn English teacher, a pile of garbage in a vacant lot, a skill crane game, a mom and pop store with years-old dusty products in the back and a chicken hoff. |

That'll totally destroy the natural environment there. 
I thought for a minute that "settle" meant that South Korea would do the
responsible thing and take the Dokdo/Takeshima dispute to the
International Court of Justice. Then have the "winner" make the place
into a nature preserve. One can dream...
Sadly, "settle" in this case means paving over everything Korean style.

All joking aside, I had hoped they would make it a nature preserve. Looks
like that won't happen now.
I still have hopes that North and South Korea will agree to make the DMZ
a nature preserve as well to protect the fragile ecosystem there. Without a
doubt the greedy chaebols will gobble up and pave over the land in the
weeks after reunification.

Yeah. I think "to settle" remains a bad verb choice here. I believe we are discussing South Korea's colonizing Dokdo -- or as you say: "paving over everything Korean style." |

I can already picture the ad for teaching in Dokdo.

Well, South Korea may have a justified claim to the islets. I am not sure. It seems like it was run by the Japanese at some point and at other times it was run by the Koreans. The US supposedly after World War II indicated the territory was for Korea. At least, that's what I read. The Korean Government at any rate is doing this for domestic consumption to distract the people. It's not like the Japanese are going to go to war over the islets, and it will give the government some breathing room.
Just put a few ajosshi there and ajummas and a small store and some goats, and you've got Korean paradise. Give them lots of soju, and they will stay.

It seems to me they have at least as much right as Japan. Moreover, it seems like a paltry enough recompense for all the abuse they suffered from the Japanese in the beginning of the last century.
But if relations were more sensible, Japan and Korea would come to a compromise and split the energy finds evenly. But obviously, that flies in the face of not merely their history, but the totality of human history and human nature as well. |
