The 18th International Congress of Linguists is being held from July 21st to 26th at Korea University in Seoul. The program looks great and registration fees are reasonable, especially if you're a student: regular fees are W60k pre-registration and W80k at the door. If you're a student, fees are W15k pre-reg and W20k at the door.

You can find additional info @ http://www.cil18.org/new_html/index.php

I'm goin', anybody else?

The congress is wonderful. Everything is very well organized; the Korea University campus is well signed out and easy to navigate, the speakers are on-time, well prepared and accessible, and the program is interesting and well put together. The only problem is that there are so many interesting sessions it's difficult to choose just one to attend!

Just a heads up to anyone in the Korea Uni area with a bit of time to spare: the organizers are not checking if you've registered or not. So, if you're interested in a session just go - most aren't full and you get to listen to the leaders in the field talk about linguistics and all of it's sub-fields. Also, on the second floor of the 우당교양관 several publishers have set up shop and are selling linguistics texts at reduced prices; you can find books about Applied Linguistics and Language Learning, and every other topic related to linguistics.

On Thursday morning, starting at 09:00, Jean Aitchison is giving a one hour talk on Language Evolution in the Inchon Memorial Hall. Looks interesting, so if you've got the time...

Thiuda, thanks for the heads-up! Smile I can't make it to the conference but I would love to buy a copy of the conference proceedings to send home to my old university...do you know if they are going to be made available to registered participants?

Manner of Speaking; yes, they make the conference proceedings available, and, when you register you receive a nifty laptop computer bag (pretty good quality, nice little logo) filled with goodies like the abstracts of all presentations, all of the handouts, free little books...etc.

I'll be at the conference all day tomorrow, from 0900 to 2230. If anyone wants to get together, send me a PM.

All the best.
