Hey,

I spent a month in Thailand during the summer.

I went to Phuket, Patpong beach, and it was disgusting.

I highly suggest going to Phi Phi. It has great diving, awesome scenery, and a pretty good nightlife.

I liked it because there are very few lady boys. I personally like going for the European birds when I'm traveling so it really didn't matter. But, it's still nice that those disgusting beasts don't get in your face when you're partying.

The party scene is not quite as fun as Koh Pagnan, but, it's still a good time. There is one bar in Phi Phi that has a boxing ring and they allow friends to go in and beat the piss outta each other. I challenged a Thai kick boxer. Big mistake!!

Anyway, unless you're into sleeping with a possible lady boy, I'd stay away from Phuket.

Oh, Koh Tao is pretty good too. Awesome diving and good night life.

I think KohPagnan has the best night life, then Phi Phi, and then Koh Tao.

For diving, Koh Tao, then Phi Phi, and then Phuket.

STAY AWAY FROM PHUKET!!!

My wife and I are off to Phuket in a week or so.

Where would you guys recommend for a beautiful, not-super-busy beach within reasonable travel distance to the action but just enough away to lose all the greasy folks?

If you're looking for a chill out vacation then check out Krabbi. I didn't see a single ladyboy. The beaches are awesome. There are many diving opportunities in clear water. The day island hoping excursions are great. Take a day tour to Kho Hong the water is so clear you don't need a facemask you can go waste high in the water and look at all the colorful fish swim by

Krabbi does sound nice, but isn't it a tad far from Phuket?

Patong beach sounds like fun, and perhaps we'll spend a couple nights there, but if we're looking to chill out should we spend more time on the lesser-known beaches? There seem to be a bunch to the south -- Karon and a couple others. Are any particularly beautiful?

And if we get sick of all the seediness, where's a good island with stunning beaches and beautiful scenery that we can hop away to?

Krabbi isn't far from Phuket you can take a taxi.

Karon beach is nice but flat. By flat I mean there's not the rugged limestone cliffs and odd looking rocks coming out of the sea that you see in Krabbi. The water is not as clear as some of the Islands off Krabbi. Also if you're looking for a beach where the horizon line isn't obcured by row upon row of beach umbrellas than Krabbi is the place for you.

If you're going to Phuket be careful of the taxi mafia. These blood suckers hang out looking for newbies and promise nice hotel deals
or sometimes claim to know the only hotel that isn't full. These parasites will get a hefty commision that comes out of your pocket.

The one day excursions that you can book through travel agencies are excellent. Beware if you're staying in a five star hotel you'll be charged more than the hippies in the bughouse. Walk down the street and ask the travel agencies what they offer. They'll pick you up at your hotel.

Cool. We might stay a night in Patong just to check it out, then head to Phi Phi or Krabbi.

Are there any reasonably cheap hotels in these places? Say, around $80 a night? Any nightlife? And most importantly, will they serve me margaritas on the beach?

Patong is more for *beep* mongerers. I'm not sure a married couple would like it. Go to Karon beach. Not sure about the Margaretta's on the beach

Koh Chang has been runied. I hit that island 7 yrs a go and there wasn't a single hooker, ladyboy in site. You could smoke freely due to no police on the island and there were a few low key places on the beach and the treehouse just off the beach. Move forward to present day and I was mortified with what I saw, Thailand is finished with and I shall never return to the los.

Phuket is a commercial hell hole full of hookers, and ladyboys, same, same but not different Koh Samui. If you want a bobbybrit hol. go Thailand, if you want something unspoilt then start researching because I sure aint going to be offering you my reccm.

Love you long time!!! Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

I don't understand how the presence of hookers can spoil your vacation. For the most part they're pretty harmless. Most of them work in bars so if you're not interested why go into the bar.

I agree the beach in Pattaya is not great. It's not the hookers that are driving speed boats and barly missing the swimmers. For the most part they're doing a job for well needed cash for their family up north. If you want to see really decadent depressing *beep* houses go to India where the ladies are locked in cages. If a few ladies dancing in go-go bars really upsets you then maybe you should just go to Cheju-do.

fellow if you would have seen Koh Chang way back, I think you would have the same perspective. It was that great that even the Thais holidayed there at christmas. I bet the thais are not doing this nowadays.

koh samed gets absolutely overrun with thai vacationers during holidays. its almost like heading to the east sea during a red calendar day in korea. i understand the whole proximity thing, but i just don't see the same appeal for koh samed as i do for other islands, particularly with the jacked up "entrance fees" to the "park."

i do agree that it is a huge step up from pattaya though. one night in pattaya certainly makes an impression though. if i was staying relatively close to bangkok, i'd head to koh chang too. it may be getting torn up and overrun with huge developments, but its still worth the trip. i like to stay down between bang bao and lonely beach.

Robot, look into going to Koh Tao. I spent three weeks on the Turtle back in February, and it was great. My colleagues were freezing their asses off here and I was kickin' back on Sairee Beach. Good times. Good people. Good place. Yeap, Koh Tao.

Just be sure to carry travel insurance if you go to the Turtle. People drive motorcycles there like there's no tomorrow. They'll run over you as soon as look at you.

Thanks for all the tips.

We ended up booking at Kata Beach Resort, which seems to have everything we want.

Once we get to Phuket, we'll decide between spending a couple nights on Phi Phi as well or just doing the day-trip thing there.
