|
|
so I finally got my Lacie firewire - 250 g - and after being confused for quite a while trying to figure out what to do with it - the directions just weren't that clear - I seem to have found the right procedure for my OS - Mac 10.4 (?something like that)
I set it to partition and it's been going now for more than 2 hours - is this right? is it because it's 250 g? I can do other stuff like use the internet - but if I go back to the utility screen the spinning wheel is there on the partition part - I can feel the drive humming away (quietly) - but stil this seems a bit long -
I haven't done this before but someone formatted a windows external drive - maybe a 40 g one - I don't recall how long it took but certainly not all that long.
comments please! |

Okay this is for Windows but since Apple can do everything better, I would say the times should be even shorter:
Quick format a 750GB external drive: 5 to 15 seconds
Partition a brand new 500GB drive: under 5 seconds
Full format a 500GB single partition drive: that takes long so I have not done it for years
Normally a quick format is all it takes. Anything over 30 minutes means there is a problem, maybe the drive is defective.
I got 2 Lacie drives (a large 500GB and a small 250GB) and there are problems with the reliability while connected. The small one has power issues with USB and the large one often "drops out" and also does not respond well to the on/off switch. Not my preferred brand anymore. |

yeah - I appreciate the comments - especially the heads up about Lacie hard drives - am not terribly impressed at this point
I was on hold w/their tech support for 1/2 hr and then we went thru the issues and at one point - oh yeah - he wanted to blame MY computer - I'm like hey no, I don't THINK so - I did a heck of a lot of maintenance procedures just to get ready to attach this drive - well he dropped that and admitted the external was, indeed, defective.
so now I have to return the $%&*###%$@@ thing !!
meanwhile I'm going over to Yongsan to check out a firewire external - not Lacie - since their firewires aren't here yet -
color me pissed |

I am very happy with the 12 500-750 GB Seagate FreeAgent drives I have. They come in plain vanilla USB, Firewire and eSATA variants. Those I have are of course all full size drives (140,000 to 200,000 KW) but there are also portable notebook sized drives.
Not sure what brand HD Lacie puts into their cases. |

Quick format should be enough. Shouldn't take more than 30 seconds to a minute, if memory serves. The long one takes like hours. |

my system never recognized it - the utility menu came up and I chose format from there and it never stopped - it went on for nearly 3 hours no window status, nothing.
when I did the force quit it said the system wasn't responding so I feel sure it just wasn't working yet.
I bought a new 7200 rpm 250 g firewire at Yongsan yesterday for 135,000. Made in China. will install it in a bit and will post how it works. I think it will be fine.
called Lacie and they are giving me a credit - I asked them not to send another drive - I think I've had enough of the Lacie experience - or maybe too much. Checking price watch the prices are nosediving anyway - even for firewires, even for 7200 rpm, down, down, how lo can they go - good news.
thanks fellows - will update later ! |

thanks for the responses - I sent my Lacie back and called them again and they are going to give me a credit - I totally do NOT recommend them their service is not very, hmmm, enthusiastic?

Dudess, for less than that price u could have gotten a 500gb 7200 + datamore M3 SUF (firewire) enclosure. There's a lot of 250's w/ firewire or estata on danawa in the 60-70,000 range. |

well - live and learn - I try not to be greedy - the first couple of places I tried either didn't have them or told me they "weren't available in Korea" - oh yeah! since I've heard THAT one before and know it's an out and out lie - why do they say that??
I kept searching - Lacie's are upwards of the 300-500 dollar range - so for me to find this at 135 I am happy -=
BUT I will price around some more when I go back on Friday
thanks for the heads up Spliff - |
