Is the currency exchange booth at Incheon Airport open 24h...or at least really early in the AM? We're flying to the Philippines at 8am and want to exchange our won before we go.

Will it be open early in the AM?

I asked this question a couple months ago and yes is the answer. To confirm it, I flew into Incheon exactly a month ago and landed at 3:30AM on a dark Wednesday morning. The money changer after immigration and security was open and actually provided service. It appears this was only serving arrivals, not departures as it was in the arrivals area where you'd get stopped if you tried to go in there from the outside where arrivals exit into the main front area with drivers holding up name signs for their passengers.

Our question now is: Is there a currency exchange for departures open 24 hours a day like there is for arrivals? I want to know this too like the OP needs.

The Korea Exchange Bank in the basement says it's open at 6:00am.

While on the subject of changing won to pesos...

Given the current conditions, or your personal experiences, do you recommend exchanging won for pesos before departing or upon arrival in the PI?

thanks! Wink

I think there's been at least 10 posts in the past week, including ttompatz twice, saying you should do it before you leave Korea. I'll save him the trouble.

I'm in the Philippines now and I will say again...

do NOT bring won to the RP.

Buy 10,000 pesos at the airport in Incheon (the max you can legally carry into the country) and bring the rest as US$. (make sure you get some p500 or 100 notes and not just 1000's)

Do NOT buy travelers checks - they are a pain at best to cash and you WILL get clipped an extra peso or 2 per dollar when you try to cash them.

The exchange rate on the ground right now is 43.50 - 44.0 pesos per dollar for cash and 42 for T/Cs (when you can cash them).

.

Tom, Is bringing 1,000,000 won or 40,000 pesos into the Phils risky cos of the 10,000 peso legal maximum requirement?
If it is. is it easy to change U.S$ into pesos all over the Phils in banks?

Just bring US$. With the current differences in exchange rates you can actually make a few pesos by exchanging your won to US$ and then dollars to pesos.

You can exchange them anywhere. The banks are NOT the best places to exchange money. Any of the Mall, department store, supermarket customer service counters give fast, efficient service and will give you a better rate than the banks.

This is true. The exchange rate or won to pesos is so bad in both Korea and the Philippines that you're better off converting won to dollars in Korea and then dollars to pesos in the Philippines.

If you have an international bank card you'd probably be best off just bringing a small amount of pesos and then withdrawing money from a bank machine in the Philippines.
