So tonight me and my pal go sign up for Korean lessons at 서을대 and we're feeling in high spirits. We drop into the local BBQ buffet place and place our shoes outside the doorstep as per the normal rules of ettiquette. After about a half hour my pal steps outside for a smoke and huh? "Curlygirl, where're my shoes?" After a thorough scout around (and the restaurant ajummas opened every locker to help us out) it seems that the shoes have simply walked off. Now my mate is none to pleased as he wears a large size shoe that is not easy to replace. I made a quick dash through the rain and managed to find some 285 size flip flops (way too small) so that he didn't have to come home barefoot. Best part of the evening: the lovely restaurant ajummas didn't charge us for the meal. So a mystery: who knicked the shoes and why?

But back on thread: What's the most random thing you've had stolen in Korea?

That's terrible to get your shoes stolen as they must had been special size 300+ that few stores sell. Hopefully you can replace them in Seoul. I was always worried someone would steal my damned shoes. Some restaurants have real lockers where you get a key.

I had my trainers (sports shoes) stolen from me in a pub in Belfast. I wasn't wearing them at the time.

I have heard of people having their shoes stolen in other countries. It can happen. If you have expensive looking shoes that someone wants, they may take it. I don't think it's common over here.

I keep all the service slips for car repairs in the glove compartment of the car. A couple of years ago, someone broke into my car, took my FM transmitter, the headphones for my mp3 player, and all the reciepts Confused

I'm counting the days until I get something stolen from me. For 23 years, so far lucky.

Last summer I was unloading my car. My boss had given me a watermelon. I set the watermelon on top of the car then went to the back to get some things out of the trunk. When I came back around, the watermelon was gone. I saw an ajumma quickly walking away with it about 20 feet away. I ran up behind her and stopped her but she was quite reluctant in letting go of it. She was really pissed after I took it out of her hands and she let out a hiss from hell. F her.

That was MY watermelon. Not hers.

Some one mugged me once (bottled me from behind) kicked the shit out of my face and stole two earings from my left ear (only ones I was wearing at the time total value $25), strange thing they missed my credit card in back pocket and watch, on wrist. also they didn't damage my ear removing the earings. I couldn't open my eyes for 4 days, my nose was broken and I lost three teeth but my ear was fine?

ok here's one and I bet none of you can beat this story -

a couple of years ago I planned an Easter dinner and invited some friends. One of my K friends asked if she could bring a co-worker from her job and I said sure of course.

so they were the first people to arrive and I had them sit down and got some cups to bring them something to drink. Well, I had a mixture of different kinds of pottery cups I planned to use that day as I didn't really have a set of glasses.

I had a very special (sentimental value) set of 2 pottery cups I bought in Japan and took one of those out of the cupboard and poured a drink in it for my friend's friend - we'll call her Young Ja. Shortly afterwards, I was doing something and turned around and saw Young Ja reaching standing up and closing my cupboard door and then she sat down. I thought how strange what is she doing but I was busy as other people were arriving.

Then I saw her bend over near her very large bag she brought with her - one of those huge square shopping bags.

Ok, whatever. The dinner - a sort of buffet style - was fun. We had lot of chatter and tea afterwards and people laughed and had a good time.

After they left I started cleaning up and washed all the dishes. As I was putting them away I couldn't find but one of those matching cups like I'd given to Young Ja to use. I looked everywhere - and since my space was limited, well, there just wasn't that many places to look and they had their own little "space" in the cupboard again, because it wasn't that big.

I even looked thru the trash - then I realized - that's when she had closed the cupboard door - she had gone in there and taken a cup!

Later after talking to other guests it seems they had seen her also in the cupboard, not just once, but twice, as I'd gone downstairs to greet someone who wasn't sure about the building.

My friend confronted her about it and of course she denied it - but come on!! the cup didn't just disappear all on its own!!

then she wrote me an email saying I called her a criminal and I said you ARE a criminal you stupid bitch I should call the police on your ass - and that she needed professional help - jees what a moron!!

my friend felt terrible but I told her it wasn't her fault - it was that crzy bitch's fault what a bleeping thing to do! and why??!!

anyway whatever -

A few years ago my apt in Ilsan was broken into while my wife and I went to the store (left the kitchen window unlocked - stupid move - but the only way anybody could have gotten in was by climbing three stories up a gas pipe. Guy must have been a monkey).

Anyway, we had my wife's jewelry in the house, a nice video camera, a couple unopened bottles of 30 year old Ballantine's whisky, my wife's Gucci handbags and other assorted shit. The house had been totally rifled through. Drawers and contents flung everywhere.

After checking everything, we found out that the only thing missing was about a $100 in Japanese Yen we had in a nightstand.

Not only did the thief have the climbing skills of a monkey, he apparently was also a total idiot.

Lock your place up, people.
