Here's how Korea can solve the teacher shortage without paying us more:
let us teach as many side-jobs as we want, like Japan does.
Why the hell not?

| they are solving the problem: 2 year uni. study, no probs, and immi. is about to change visa reulations for Phillipinos. So, in short you aint going to see a significant increase in pay. To be honest the quality of western teachers here astounds beacuse it is of a poor quality!!! The philpinos will do a better job. Bring it on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 |

Uh, there are some Phillipino English teachers out here and their grammar is all messed up. Their sentences aren't right sometimes and the Kteachers probably don't notice. So yeah bring it on!!!! I'm sure it will astound you!!!! |

Considering that my main coteach lived in America for 7 years and still can't speak two sentences without making a mistake in both of them, I for one will welcome the frat boys and Fillipinos.
At least the humour quotient will go up by about double in this country. |

Some of us (me) don't get those anyway. Not providing them is an advantage for those of us already here anyway; it creates a barrier for new people.
I'm not afraid of competition, but less is obviously better for us. |

I know a few Phillipinos here, and the overwhelming majority of them are incredibly difficult to understand at times. They speak quickly, and use a piginized version English that can be more than confusing on occasion.
If I can't understand them, I'm sure the Koreans will last about a day with a Phillipino teacher before walking out.
It just makes me laugh every time I see these posts of the "Phillipino invasion" of the ESL industry.
Although it might be good material for a comedy short on SNL, I have no worries of Phillipinos overrunning the market here.
Let them come.
Watch them go.
Then again, the SK govt. isn't known for it's long term planning when it comes to implementing policies, so this is yet another candidate idea for the Darwin awards waiting to happen. |

The market demands solo tutoring. Legislating it out of existence has proved impossible, costly, and a roaring suck (sorry, I love that expression) on the wildly understaffed and overworked immigration officials. They need to go Gumby on this one, and bend a little. Maybe if we start a rumor that this is how the Scandinavians all speak four languages..."yeah, it's totally because their teachers are all allowed to do side jobs. Wave of the future, for sure."
No, I know--let's start a rumor that Dubai is the hub of whatever because THEIR teachers are allowed to do side jobs! Yeah, that's the ticket.
Seriously, I think it's a good idea. It may be that contractors hire us in without providing accomodation, true, but that'd be for jobs that only ask like ten or fifteen hours a week of you. Without the digs, who the hell would take a 30 hour a week contract?
The hagwon lobby might argue, but I say, "let the market speak."
And then there's the issue of 'sending your tykes abroad to get violated and corrupted and addicted to stuff at massive expense' issue, too. The vast majority of moms and dads here would prefer to keep the babies at home safely tucked in every night, and keeping that foreign-bound money (at least more of it) circulating in the local economy would be a strong selling point as well...
Really, I think I'm on to something here. |
