Something went very very badly with my laptop HD. I couldn't even get into safe mode. I tried to boot to a command prompt and it wouldn't recognize the C drive. Pulled the HD out and put it in a case. My other computer wouldn't read the HD. Fark. Fark. One last thing to try. Made a bootable CD with linux:

http://www.slax.org/get_slax.php

Runs 100% off the CD. And it will read a Windows NTFS formatted drive. Alright plopped that into the laptop CD. Linux loads no probs. And reads the HD Windows won't read. I pop in a 4 gig thumb drive and Linux reads it no problem either. Okay! We're in biz. Fire brigade a couple 4 gig SD cards between the laptop and my other computer and get the files transfered over.

(Alright I'm usually pretty good at backing up and it wouldn't have been a total disaster. But it would have been a pain to recreate some stuff.)

Crazy pro-atheist link at the bottom of that page.

I'll pass.

If you put your hard disk into another computer then you can still read it provided that the system you're using is XP or Vista and running as the main administrator.

What was the error message when it couldn't read your hard disk?

I put it in a case and my other computer wouldn't read it via the USB cable.

That would be the same thing (IDE/SATA vs USB).

What I'm trying to say is that you can definitely access the hard drive using another computer if you boot up as an administrator and in safe mode. Just transfer the ownership of the files in the affected drive to the administrator and you should be able to access the files.

It didn't save my life, but it certainly changed it ... <sighs>

I've had quite a few problems with USB hard drives and Vista, that Ubuntu doesn't seem to have. There's something about Windows that just doesn't like hard drives. Hats off to Linux for always mounting--it's practically a porn star. Very Happy
