Hi everyone, I am so sorry about this. I know there has been plenty of post regarding this, but I wanted to ask those people who worked in EPIK if they actually needed the residency certificate. EPIK stated that I a residency certificate (an official proof of residency) is needed in order to get tax exempted.

It seems that some people stated that they didn't need the certificate to get exempted. If that is the case, I don't want to waste my time and money to get this certificate.

Thanks

Apparently, it's not necessary.

Thanks, I actually read that prior to posting this one

Anyone with suggestion...should I wait until I go to Korea to see if I actually need one?

I would really like to hear a definitive answer on this one. I'm from New Zealand and numerous govt agencies have told me there is no such thing for NZ citizens.

My Mother says she got one back in the 80's but she's Australian so was a resident back then. I don't think the Korean tax department really knows what they are talking about. I've been here five months now but I presume I can just claim back my tax as a tax return.

Can some one verify that?

Anyway, I feel your pain, I'm thinking about photoshopping something up. How would they know the difference?

Oh yea, one more thing. Doesn't a passport prove you to be a resident of a country? Seems like just another wacky hoop to me.

No, a passport proves that you are a citizen of a country which is not the same as a resident.

Yes, please, can someone clarify this information. I sent EPIK a copy of my birth certificate and passport, and they didn't have a problem with it. But I don't want to arrive in Korea and have my boss asking me for this certificate that I don't have.

Bring the proof of residency with you. Even if you don't need it, tomorrow the laws could change and require you present it.

You don't need it straight away. It's for tax exemption if you work at public school. I've been here 5 months and havn't given them one. I think you need to have it by the end of the tax year to claim tax back though.

I don't know what country you are from but I'm from New Zealand and no such thing exists there. I'm sure there's some type of equivalent though.
