I was planning on heading over to Samcheok for vacation this week. Anyone know if the *beep* sculpture festival is still going on? What else is there to see? My coworkers said there are some caves. I'm planning on staying at a random love motel near the station, but if anyone knows of a hostel or a better place to stay I would appreciate the advice.I'm alos considering spending a day or two in Andong or Jeongdongjin. Any advice would be great. |

I don't know about a festival, and I'm assuming the beeped word relates to the male reproductive organ, but there is a remarkable sculpture park and museum just south of Samcheok that has what I think you're looking for on permanent display. I went last summer, took some great pictures, and had a most memorable day. I think the park is called "Hwaeshindang" or something very close to that. 홰신당? Definitely check it out, it's one of a kind.
I went through one of the large caves in town and that was worthwhile too. There seemed to be lots more to see in the area but we were passing through and only spent a day there.
Anyway, have fun, and try to get down to that park. It has beaten the pants off of everything else I've seen in Korea for downright weirdness, and there is a fascinating historical/local folklore element to it as well. |

Yeah, the p e n i Z park is a little ways south of Samcheok, definitely weird but worth seeing. It's a permanent park on some cliffs (Sangtaehwaesindang Park in Sinnam-ri, I think), the beaches around there are beautiful sandy coves with small fishing villages. Really pretty. There is a huge cave, but even though Samcheok calls itself "The Cave City" it's actually 23 kms. out of town. Don't assume you'll be able to walk to it. All in all, a nice town although pretty sleepy after dark and the restaurants were a little spotty in terms of actually serving what was on the menu. |

I live next to the penile park. Samcheok has caves, yes. Also consider beach combing. The beaches of Gangwon-do are FAR less crowded than those of the South and West coasts.
-There are nice hotels and real flea traps all over Samcheok. |
