|
|
1. The Post Office - The Korean Post Office is cheap and efficient. For example; you can buy a huge packing box for 800 won (less than a dollar).
In Canada, it costs $1.80 (1,800 won) just to mail a post card overseas. A small packing box is $4.00 (4000 won) and the gov also charges tax on all stamps and supplies at the post office.
2. Korail - The Korean train company. The KTX is fast and usually on-time. The other trains are not bad for short distances. I like the fact that the prices are fixed. Whether I buy a ticket a month before my departure or 10 minutes before, the price does not change (unless coach is totally sold out).
In Canada, we have Via Rail. The trains are slow, not punctual and too expensive. They have a variable price system like the airlines have. The more the train fills up on a given date, the higher the price goes. So, a one-way trip between Toronto and Montreal in coach class has about 4 different prices ranging from $59 to $128 for the exact same seats. And just in case you think you can buy cheap tickets early and cancel later if your plans change, think again. The $59 tickets have a no refund no exchange policy.
3. The teenagers. Korean teens are not all that bad. They might get a little loud in the PC rooms, but for the most part, they're pretty harmless.
I'll comment on Montreal here.Teens in Montreal suck. They're totally destroying the city. Previous generations wrote graffiti with spray paint in the subway. The next generation ripped up the upholstery of the subway and bus seats with the pocket knives. The latest generation now etches messages into the windows of subway cars with their pocket knives scratching them all up making them look ugly. Bus shelter windows get the same treatment. This contributes to making the city look like crap. Toronto is cleaner and Vancouver (the last time I saw it) was in really good shape.
There's my little list. I'd like to know yours. Korea does kick ass in some departments. So, what's better here than in your home country? |

| yeah, the restaurant situation is probably the best. But really only if you like Korean food. It's hard to argue with delicious galbi, beer, and unlimited side dishes for about 10k |

Good thread!
Things I don't miss from home:
Cold houses in winter.
Pacific Island and Maori street gangs.
Low salaries for teachers who are expected to be counselors, coaches, doctors, nurses, cooks, cleaners, culture experts, and fathers.
PC bullshit
The grievance industry (which includes all the lazy people who think the state owes them a life).
The price of cigs
The price of dental care and doctors visits.

Telecommunication costs...
I have a cellphone, Cable TV and the most stable Internet Service in the world. The cost of all three together??? Less than 100 USD.
Now, how much would the disgustingly poor customer service and the shocking greed of US Telecommunications cost at the same level?
DirecTV???
Comcast???
Please..... |

Prescriptions - Much cheaper here than in the US even with a co-pay.
* Birth Control - No prescription needed, only 5 bucks here. I remember my relationships paying 30 or so a month back home.
Public Transportation - Only in a few cities in America is there such transporation. This is the first time in my life I didn't need a car.
Beer - The Quality of beer here is amazing. Cass and Hite are the peak of consumer pleasure in the beverage industry.
Movers - I moved from Suwon to Seoul for 70 dollars. I didn't have to do a thing. Would of been about 300 at least back home.
*** One of these is dripping with sarcasm. |

Kiwis' obsessive anger over political correctness is more obnoxious and annoying than the PC itself could possibly be. Sorry mate. |
I totally agree! I can't tell you how many times I've gotten into unexpected spats with Kiwis because of the obsessive political correctness. Hmmm...
Internet connection speeds and availability are better than anything back home. |

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. Perhaps my social group was disproportionately Kiwi for a while. |

And Australian is even worse than there, it's rediculous.
Our 30GB 1.5mbps is more than $100 per month on its' own. (Best we've found after months of searching)
Mobile phone calls charged per 30 second intervals.
Let's not get into the cable (satellite since cable is only in a few places) prices. |
