Fascinating..
Japanese society seems so warped and exotic sometimes. |

i don't think i'd call it a "fad".
fads die out, this just keeps going.
with the chemical gas stuff, apparently there's some rumor that if you kill yourself with gas it's painless and leaves your body looking clean and pure (or something like that).
if you jump, your body is broken, but with the gas you'll be "preserved".
in some media, suicide looks glamorous; and in other areas it's seen as a way to free yourself from a problem (bullying, debt).
it's really...sad. |

This is interesting from the article, it explains a lot:
Quote: |
For an unemployed, former "salaryman," suicide can be "a rational decision," Yamada says. When a man commits suicide in Japan, his beneficiaries can still collect his life insurance. And insurers pay off Japanese home mortgages when a family's breadwinner dies even if the death is a suicide. "If he dies, the rest of the family gets money," Yamada says. "If he continues to live without a job, they will lose the house." |
However, I usually think of it being more a problem with young people.
Recently I was teaching euphemisms for death: 'passed on', 'kicked the bucket', 'went to heaven', 'no longer with us'...and then someone suggested 'no longer happy on this earth' which caused me to pause. Really more of a euphemism for suidice, but didn't know if I even wanted to get into euphemisms for that word to a Japanese classroom! |
