I work for GEPIK and recently heard a rumour that an amendment was made this week raising the number of vacation days to 20 and raising housing allowance to W400,000...and possibly some other changes.

Can anyone confirm that there's truth to this?
Thanks.

I've been given 20 vacation days this year, although not in my contract.
Maybe this is the secret reason why?

I am about to sign through a recruiter for GEPIK and was also told about the extra vacation time being added. I wonder if it is to make up for the number of holidays that fall on weekends in '09?

Whats the catch!
If they give something , they will surely want something in return.
I realise that their is a teacher shortage , and therefore it would make sense that GEPIK try to improve their working conditions.
But you have to remember ,they aint that smart to begin with.
My school has hinted at the fact that they d prefer it , if I were to work everyother Sat.
Has anyone else's school done the same.

I just re-signed with my school a few weeks ago. I'm with GEPIK and the contract has the standard sh1tey 14 working days vacation. Do you think if there was an amendment made to the number of vacation days i'd be eligible?...or would it only be applicable to people who sign the contract after the changes take place?

Please. It hurts to laugh that hard this time of day. Very Happy Laughing Very Happy

But, of course, since you were re-signing, in addition to those 14 weekdays (one day short of having 3 weeks off if you count weekends) you get an additional 2 weeks off for traveling (or not traveling) plus another 5 days added if you're in a designated rural area.

My school is pretty decent about it. They only make me do a 1-week in-school camp winter and summer break and then I'm off all the days the Koreans are off. None of that coming in and sitting in an empty school crap.

The GEPIK contract that I just signed says that I "... shall be offered 4 week paid leave (including weekend and public holidays)". Is this not the way it sounds?

No. Mine doesn't read that way. Mine says 14 days paid leave excluding weekends and holidays, BUT for the renewal leave it says another 14 days inclusive of weekends and holidays. Got it. The basic 14 days are exclusive of weekends and holidays and the renewal leave is inclusive of weekends and holidays. And if one is in a designated rural area, they get an additional 5 working days paid leave.

That's what my 2008 contract says anyway. I'm sitting here re-reading the details as I type this.

My contract says nothing about 14 days. Just the 4 weeks. It also specifically says that the four weeks is "...2 weeks long during the summer and winter vacation, respectively." Now I'm worried that I am going to get screwed on my vacation.

No need to worry. Sounds like you are getting a better deal than the current GEPIK teachers. Unless you don't get public holidays or the 2 calendar re-sigining bonus weeks then you're fine.

The amendment is true. I received notice for it today. It applies to teachers beginning a new contract in September or August, though, and those signing new contracts after those months. No retroactive coverage for us.

I was really hoping that wouldn't be the case! Why is it, than when there is a contract amendment which benefits us, it's not retroactive, but when it demands more from the teacher it is retroactive. (Remember that contract amendment in April that we "had" to sign - something about splitting classes in half and teaching other subjects in English)

So according to the new contract, all teachers will recieve 20 days vacation and rural teachers will recieve 25, correct? Or are they doing away with the rural allowance?

What exactly is the GEPIK ammendment? Is it only increased vacation time or does it include an increase in living allowance?

Also, this applies to new contracts that start August and Sept. My contract starts in Sept. but it is a renewal. Do any of the new ammendments apply to people who renew or only newbies?

Can this info be confirmed on the GEPIK website?
