It's winging it. I wouldn't blame someone for playing it once or twice a year. Any more and it's just killing time. It's really teacher centered and it usually only gets the top ten % involved.

And strangely the higher ups consider that game the pinnacle of success for a native teacher heh.

All post to this thread must be phrased in the form of a question.

How many people haven't been in cruisemonkey's kitchen?

I've never played Jeopardy, but I certainly don't agree with OP's conviction. Given the material it uses, it could reinforce previous lessons. If involvement is required, change the rules to make all students play. Any game can be used successfully, that's a sign of real and good teacher.

Answer: Who is Cary Grant, Tony Curtis, and Joan Crawford

Who is Roger Reid?

It would all depend on your students, as the previous posts states it could go to reinforce prior lessons.

Is that a question?

Doesn't this belong in the 'Off Topic' forum?

It is never WHAT but HOW -- that's an ancient form of wisdom that can be applied across a whole spectrum of situations.

Have you ever printed the slides and given them to students to read as questions or do prior? Or post? file - print preview - 6 slides / page

Have you had them use the questions as survey questions for a walk around prior to playing (print / cut same as above)

Have you had everyone answer - a la whiteboards?

Have you had them make their own games?

Have you put the games online and allowed them to play in a computer lab in small groups or given them the link to view at home?

Have you used game counters/ bonus/ spinners / bags of money as ways to help students master prices/numbers?

I've done all of the above and I could go on and on with alternative ways to make it conversational and whole class.

Plus as BB mentioned, it is an excellent way to reinforce learning.

Here is the latest Olympic game I've used. http://www.scribd.com/doc/4107801/Jeopardy-Olympic-Heroes

Check out the EFL 2.0 scribd. thousands of lessons/books/handouts for instant download. Also a good search feature for them all.

It's embarrassing when Jeopardy is implemented into a lesson as a novelty and does nothing to reinforce the lesson's content. What also bothers me is when teachers print off lesson materials from the internet and essentially throw it at the students to do without any sort of guidance/modeling (i.e. how-to help) whatsoever, such that the teacher has to interrupt the speaking/role-play activity about 3 or 4 times to get students on track doing it properly. It's fine to adapt materials, but I find some teachers at their demo lessons think that obtaining good materials from any source makes a lesson whole. Here it is, what a good worksheet, my teaching is done.

Ugh. As for material use of these kind of interview/interviewee dialogues off Boggles ESL and other distributors, it goes without saying that students shouldn't be reading off the worksheet the entire time. After some practice, have them turn over the worksheet and attempt to perform the practical matter of speaking to, and looking at, their partners. Wink

I reinforce my lessons by providing error correction at the end. That is, I've walked, monitoring students doing partner/group work, and noted mistakes or errors in speech that are representative of typical missteps. I write them up on the board at the end and we work together to provide correction. I've used Jeopardy a few times to such end.

Who is an uncreative teacher?

Is it one who hasn't got the imagination to adapt almost any game to the needed purpose?
