How do I ensure that my current employer follows through with their stated intention to get a release letter?

First, try to get that release letter now.

I offered to save my first school some money during my last month, and by breaking the contract you give up severance and a flight home. I think that is a substantial gain for the hagwon. They can use that money to get a new teacher at no cost to them.

Also, consider if the school paid pension or not. If they didn't, I understand you can do back payments and they will have to match it. There is more money there if you need to persuade your first school to give a release letter.

Other than that, I think you are under their mercy, don't piss them off and offer free stuff along the way to end on a good note.

If you are more than 8 months into your contract, then you could just leave the country and re-enter on a tourist visa to buy the time.

They say I have to go with my director to immigration because I'm only 2 months into my contract.

Without knowing the specifics, your question becomes 'stupid'.

Yes, boys and girls, contrary to what 'teachers' tell you there are stupid questions. Rolling Eyes
