I'm a bit of a history buff and I've been looking for some 19th and early 20th century pictures of Korea. The pickings have been kind of slim so far.

There is one site from the National Museum but it is in Korean only.

I found this one youtube but it looks like it might be pro-Japan propaganda (this is what Korea was like before we civilized it)

Thanks in advance

Maybe not as old as you are looking for, but here is a link to a great now and then comparison of Anyang City from a GI who was stationed there after the Korean War.

Thanks a lot for the links.

The transistion in Korea over the past century has been amazing. Seems like they went from the middle ages to modern times in less than a century.

Would love to talk to some old people (over 90). What they have seen.

You might be interested in Korean photos from 1871 by Felice Beato. You can find them on my website: http://www.shinmiyangyo.org/nthumbs.html They were probably the first photos taken in Korea.

Yes, it came back to Korea last October on a long-term loan (up to ten years), but there is hope that within that time a permanent return can be worked out. When Kanghwa Island finishes building their new historical center, the flag will be displayed there.

Here are pics from the ceremony:

Quote:
The following dispatch was received from Admiral Rodgers at the Navy Department, Washington, June 28:

Corea, June 23, 1871

To the Secretary of the Navy: The Coreans not apologizing for their treacherous attack, on the 10th we landed on Kang Noe, took and destroyed the lower fort and munitions.
On the 11th we took another fort, and then stormed and captured the stronghold. Five posts have been taken. The troops which defended them are reported as numbering 11, 000. There was desparate hand-to-hand fighting in the citadel.
The ordnance was destroyed, 481 pieces (principally small brass pieces), very many small arms, and fifty flags taken.
We counted 243 dead Coreans around the citadel. We had three killed. They were the gallant Lieutenant MKee, who was first inside the citadel, killed with bullet and spear, marine Denis Hanrahan, and landsman Seth Allen. Our nine wounded are all out of danger and doing well.
John Rodgers Commodore United States Navy.

The Coreans claim justification for the murder of the crew of the General Sherman on the ground that the latter were guilty of piracy.

Here's a guy on flickr that has a bunch from around 1900. I printed and laminated a bunch of them, my kids go crazy for them.
