So I agreed to sign on for my school's new adult continuing studies programme this year, on the understanding that I'd have 'around ten' students. Well, the programme got advertised who-knows-where and today I found out that there will in fact be 30 students in the class (the school must be making a tonne of money off this). Now, I'm very used to teaching middle & high school classes of various (often mixed) levels that size, but my only experience teaching adults comes from teaching university students history in classes of 10-30.
What I'd like to know from people who've taught Korean adult EFL classes of ~30 is what approaches you took, how you found ways to get students to participate, and what if any textbook material worked best. If anyone could compare and contrast teaching teen classes that size with adults it would be especially appreciated. |

Often the reason for this is that they are being pressured by an employer to attend something that they are really interested in.
Personally, I haven't found teaching adult classes to be that different. I would still use a lot of material from Tell Me More because it gets the students talking rather than sitting around listening to a lecturer. And I have used some of the same competitive team games for learning that I used with younger students to great success. |
