EA: PS3 Red Alert 3 Cancellation Due to 'Exotic and Tough' Development Environment by Aaron Linde Jul 28, 2008 3:15pm CST tags: Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, EALA
Following the indefinite hold of the PlayStation 3 version of EALA's Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 (PC, 360), publisher Electronic Arts has revealed that the title was shelved due to development issues on the platform.
"We actually announced a PS3 version early on but that was when we were still doing a lot of technical exploration of the architecture," EALA producer Amer Ajami told Videogamer. "PS3 is a very powerful system but as you guys know it's very exotic and tough to develop for and our engine really at the time wasn't designed for PS3."
Ajami further noted that EALA "might go back and do something with the PS3 later on."
Electronic Arts had not divulged any reason for the cancellation when word came early last month, stating only that it was "refocusing resources" towards the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the alternate-timeline RTS.
Red Alert 3 was to be the first traditional Command & Conquer entry on PlayStation 3, with the Xbox 360 having received C&C3: Tiberium Wars last year and C&C3: Kane's Wrath earlier this summer. The first-person shooter spinoff Tiberium is still planned to hit PC, PS3 and 360 sometime later this year.
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 is currently slated to arrive on the PC and Xbox 360 this coming October. |

| As I recall, this is exactly the same issue the Sega Dreamcast had that eventually got it killed. |

I just use my PS3 for blu-ray playing, but I'll tell you -- as smart as Sony thinks it is, one can really see why it's a stodgy old Japanese company that's too proud of itself to really pull something off well.
My biggest beef with the PS3 is that there is no simple on/off button on ANY of their remotes. They require you to hunt menus with the TV on to turn it off. The remotes and game controllers are all bluetooth, so you can bump them ANYWHERE in the room, and they'll turn the machine on. Then it sits and runs, runs, runs until you figure it out and shut it off. And shutting it off usually requires you to turn on your TV (and in my case, my receiver too because HDMI needs the receiver on as well) to get the thing turned off. That, or get up and walk across the room and hold your finger on the off button for 5 seconds. Yes... 5 seconds!
Sony has been very snooty about the whole thing, and people who bitch about this often see their complaints deleted from their sites.
Sony has even gone so far as to disable 3rd party work-arounds for this problem in software. They don't want the machines off. I keep hoping some international energy commission starts making them look bad by highlighting the problem. |

| You can use the controller to turn off your PS3. You don't need to hold down the power button for five seconds. |

And the process for that includes at least three different clicks in a pattern that may or may not work depending on where you are in the menu system.
Hold down the PS button for 3 seconds, push X, push X, and then Push X.
That only works IF you are in the right part of the menu system -- and you have to wait for your PS3 to fully boot before these will work, as well.
Wouldn't just one "off" button be a hell of a lot easier?
If your TV is off, which is usually what happens when you bump your controller or PS3 remote (which is sooo sensitive) then your PS3 turns on. Then you have to go through this mess of a process to get it turned off. It's far quicker to just get up, walk across the room, and turn it off.
It's a royal pain in the ass which many people complain about, but Sony goes to great lengths to surpress complaints on its sites. There are even 3rd party devices meant to help with this issue, but Sony is so stubborn that they purposely changed the power state of the USB ports and the way the menu system works so that some of them would be rendered useless. |

| The PS2 is still good. I'm deliberately not playing the PS3 or XBOX 360 because I think I won't enjoy the PS2 as much if I become used to their graphics. PS2 games are cheap as well and still coming out. |
