What struck me after reading this is how silly the whole thing is. Dokdo is two craggy little rocks in the middle of nowehere with really marginal significance to anything other than nationalistic pride to both Korea and Japan. Korea has two cops living there full time and no visitors allowed.
Basically, Japan would have to start a war to gain sovereignty over it, (Korea certainly isn't going to just hand it over) and the recent spate of diplomatic wrangling seems like Japan is purposely trying to piss off the Koreans.
Nevertheless, you have to watch out for those Japanese. They have been known to take things that are not theirs.

It's always amused me to no end that in the West they're called the Liancourt Rocks. We can't even be bothered to call them islands. What if a point of your national pride was based on two big hunks of stone poking out of the water? |

Great article. I can understand much better now, instead of hearing the story in Konglish.
If there's that much gas hydrate there, Korea had better hold on tight. |

Nice one. Got any other blanket statements you wish to make that are categorically false.
South Korea is deluding themselves of course. Besides the fact that their evidence is extremely weak vis a vis the legitimate ownership of Dokdo/Takeshima they are literally throwing away billions of dollars.
The amount of trade that could be done with Japan that is being thrown away by South Korea's temper tantrums is worth far, far more than some non-renewable resources that will probably pollute the area and destroy the natural environment.
Here's a brief extract and the link:
Seouls choice: Busan or Takeshima
Posted by ampontan on Monday, July 21, 2008
SOON OR LATE, South Korea will have to choose which paradigm to apply for its relations with Japan. They have two choices, both of which can be represented by geographical entities.
One choice is Busan, a city of more than three million on the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. It lies only 140 miles away from Fukuoka City in Kyushu across the Sea of Japan. Kyushu is the southernmost of Japans four main islands and has a population of roughly 13 million people.
The other choice is Takeshima, a group of islets in the Sea of Japan claimed by both countries. (The South Koreans call the islets Dokto.) The islets have a combined area of 187,450 square meters, or 46 acres. In contrast, Central Park in New York City covers 843 acres.
The Busan Choice
Cross-strait relations between Busan and Kyushu have thrived for more than a millennium. The interaction between Kyushu and southeastern Korea was so extensive that some scholars in both countries consider the region as a whole to have been one cultural sphere. The sea route between the two areas was the avenue through which Chinese culture entered Japan. Until the end of the 8th century, Kyushu (and the Japanese imperial court) interacted more extensively with the Baekche and Silla kingdoms than it did with the Japanese northeast.
Today Busan is South Koreas second-largest city and most important port. It is the hub of Korean logistic operations, has an advanced commercial and industrial infrastructure, and is the center of the countrys offshore fishery industries.
Meanwhile, Kyushu accounts for 10% of Japans GDP. Standing alone, the regions GDP exceeds that of both The Netherlands and Australia.

Mind you, any special economic zones with Kyushu might be compromised
by wingnuts like this guy claiming that Kyushu is Korean land. Incredible...

Oh, I'll stand behind that one, Guri Guy. The Japanese have a long history of taking things that are not theirs. Most recently, their heinous occupation of Korea in the last century (for instance). Uh, word has it they also tried to claim sovereignty over the United States in tandem with this guy named Adolf Hitler. We had all sorts of trouble explaining to them that they can't do that. It is as accurate a blanket statement as a blanket statement can be. Now run along and go try to censor somebody else's thread with your political correctness. Scoot.

What's false about that? What about Manchuko? Sakhalin? Most of Eastern China? Vietnam, the Phillipines, Burma, Korea, Formosa, Okinawa, Papua New Guinea?

It is amazing what Nazis the P.C. crowd has become. They don't seem to understand that their self-righteousness; their thirst for dictating to others what they can say and can't say, is the key ingredient to all fascism.

Wow. It is usually about page 6 before people like you bring out the "big guns". Playing your trump card so early. You've really outdone yourself.

Because of 40 years of history, all Japanese people are prone to thievery, are sneaky and you have to watch out for them. |
You sound like Ishihara when he said that all foreigners were sneaky thieves. Be glad that you are in select company with that racist.
Let's see...Koreans invaded Japan under the Mongols in the thirteenth century. They also invaded Tsushima in 1419. They invaded and occupied Takeshima. Should I say that Koreans are warlike and that you have to watch them carefully, lest they attack you? Sounds like your "logic".
Thankfully, most intelligent people don't think that way or the world would be a total disaster. |

Take a look at Guri Guy's past posts. Troll of the century.
And where did you get that last "quote" from, regarding the Japanese being "sneaky." It wasn't said in this thread and you did not cite the source (now whose being "sneaky"?)

Not being a Korean myself, I find I have next to zero interest in this issue. |

Yes, that's correct Guri Guy: Troll. Webster's dictionary says a troll is "A person who posts on the internet with no other purpose than to piss people off."
That's you. Troll. Look in the mirror.

Whatever you say Trevor. I post to debate and discuss topics. I post to give information or challenge someone's else's opinion. You can agree with me or disagree. If you think I'm wrong, show me the error through thoughtful, well constructed arguments.
Calling me a Nazi and a Troll shows me that you certainly don't wish to do the same. If cheap shots and calling people names is your style then I don't have time for you. Once again, have a nice day... |
