Anyone know what the penalty is for drunk driving in Seoul? What if you hit someone while drunk behind the wheel and badly injure them? |

They have the right to send you to the nick, but being Asia a big pile of green backs will resolve all problems. |

Up to a 2 mil won fine and 2 years in jail. After the new law changes posted in the Korea Times last week, it will be 5 mil won fine and 3 years in jail.
Like rhino said, bribes do work, but you'll need a good Korean person to handle that for you. |

5 million KRW fine and 3 years in jail? Even for first time offenders? |

Why do you ask?
Korea is pretty strict when it comes to drunk driving. I can't count the number of times I've been past a road block where the police breathalyze every driver that goes by. A couple of my friends have been caught. Neither had to serve any jail time but I know one had to pay a 2,950,000 won fine and got a suspended license. |

You call that strict? This basically is saying that anyone with money can afford to drive drunk. |

There are no excuses to drive drunk here period. Some wanna say you shouldn't drive drunk anywhere, blah blah blah. But here you got cheap taxi's, buses/subway until 12 and business where you can hire someone to drive your car home for you.
If you indeed got a DUI, you're just a plain irresponsible idiot. |

Well, I can only compare to the United States since that's where I'm from. I think Korea is much more strict than the U.S. when it comes to DUI's. First of all, you have a much higher chance of being caught in Korea because they test everyone at the roadblocks. The fact is, if you drink and drive in Korea regularly, you're going to get caught sooner rather than later.
I would drive back home after having a few drinks and never once got a DUI. Never even got pulled over once. Same goes for my friends. On the other hand, I've gone through roadblocks here in Korea many times. If I were drunk and driving, I would have surely gotten a DUI each time.
As for the fines, I don't know how much they are back home since I never got a DUI. I know my cousin got a DUI and he just spent a night (or several hours) in a cell at the police station until his dad bailed him out that morning. I know his fine was less than $3,000. Don't know whether license suspensions are longer in Korea or in the U.S.
So, when I say it's strict here, I say so in comparison to the U.S. Not sure what country you are from. |

I have to agree. This is why I'm wondering why the OP asked in the first place.
Cabs are so cheap in Korea and there are driver services that are not much more expensive. My friend regularly calls a driver and the fee comes out to 10,000 won. The cab ride to his house would cost 5 or 6,000 won. |

If you really want to know whether I got a DUI or not, it's frankly none of your business, but the answer is no. I've never even driven in Korea. Sorry to disappoint you. |

I was wrong, I misquoted the fine. Try 3 years in jail and 10 million won in the near future. Unless you have bribe money, of course.

Punishment for drink driving will also get tougher ― a three-year prison term or a 10 million won fine from the current two-year jail term and maximum 5 million won fine. |

Ouch. So a first time offender with a clean record could potentially get 3 years in jail if he gets caught driving under the influence? Really? I wonder how often that happens. Not gonna argue whether I think the punishment is too tough or too lenient since drunk driving is pretty much inexcusable...but the penalty here seems to be greater than in the city I'm from. |

I'm not interested in whether you got a DUI or not. If you got a DUI, then you probably wouldn't have to pose the question in the first place. I'm just curious as to why you're asking. I may have took it the wrong way but I figured you were possibly contemplating driving drunk. |

Didn't mean to jump down your throat, but due to your persistence as to why I asked the question, I took it that you were trying to get me to admit that I got a DUI.
And no, I've never contemplated drunk driving either. I don't plan to drive here in Seoul. Ever. |
