America's version of the colony is the military base. If we totaled up the land area, of all the countries that we have established military bases in, the extent of America's global reach would be larger than the British Empire, at its zenith, in 1897. The British Empire was the largest known empire in the world's recorded history.

What do you think of the image above? Do you consider the United States of America a modern day incarnation of an empire? Discuss.

*update* Obviously people think I'm some kind of America hater on this thread. I posted this article from a neutral perspective to gain your insight into the idea of what constitutes an "empire." Nothing more, nothing less. I'm not making a political statement either. This was just the image I stumbled upon last night. Have fun!

A) What does this have to do with Korea?

B) Do you have any idea what you're talking about?

A question for my fellow Americans out there in K-Land and beyond: Have you ever been accosted, verbally or otherwise, by a Canadian, Euro, etc, just for being American? I was attacked by a Swede just for being American. I tell people over and over that I hate my country's foreign policy, loathe GW, congress, etc. I tell them I am just a guy trying to make a living and mind my own business. I vote and make calls and send emails to politicians, but it doesn't do any good. What do the America haters expect us to do? Start a revolution? To avoid such a revolution, the US has made agreements with Canada and Mexico to send in troops to quell any such insurrection. There goes that idea!

Should be in red only the countries occupied through force of arms by the US army. The other countries with American bases are free to ask them to leave. If they dont, thats probably because they are persuaded of the merits of a military alliance with the Empire .

Happens all of the time. They act like their countries are perfect! (Ask Canadians about their tax rate. That usually shuts them up.)
They complain about the USA ,yet, they all want to go to the USA for college or work.Rolling Eyes

Feel free to leave the "empire of the USA" any time you choose and live in North Korea, Iran, or any other dictatorship. Rolling Eyes
Didn't think you would, hypocrite.

Some Kiwi meathead, who was of Maori descent, and apparantly sterile, from what he told every woman he met in Changwon, started talking shit the very second I met him.

Later he helped my stupid Scottish c*** of a co-teacher Julia pull a runner. Later that summer, in Busan, I was there with five lovely Korean teachers, when I happened upon him at an outdoor shopping area.

We glared at each other a few moments, then the ladies came out from shopping and we went to go eat. I looked him in the eye and said, "Sucks about Julia, eh Jango?" and winked at him as we walked away......

Jango of course being a sly reference to the Maori actor who played Jango Fett in the last Star Wars trilogy. Wink

some days ya just gotta access your inner Lex Luthor.

Colonialism was implemented to ensure captive supply for raw material, and captive demand for manufactured goods. That's not quite what America has going at the moment.

And it's not an either/or. One can critical of American foreign policy and not go live in North Korea. How childish.

Sorry, but those are just not even close to being equivalent.

If you are working in South Korea, you are here only because of the US military keeps this nation free. Wink
Yeah, go live in North Korea if being in South Korea is so bad because Americans keep it free. Wink

How is that so? Once the US pulls out NK will invade? Do you believe that? One can be critical of US foreign policy and still think that we should have bases in other countries. It's. Not. That. Simple.

It would be NK's suicide. They could do that right now if they wanted to.
