What about the contract? Deposit? Parking...? The sites I've found are in Korean so they hard to figure out and my level...

I'm not interested in buying a used car. I can swing 400k a month for it if it runs alright and has maintenance.

I looked into it and was told its very expensive. I found a couple of used car sites that were in English and a couple of them talked about "long term rentals" which is basically what a lease is. I emailed them and was told its basically for corporate customers here for like 6 months at a time. I got the impression it was a lot more than $400/mo.

A better alternative, if you only need a car for the weekends is to go through Hertz. I can rent an Avante for like $60/day. SUVs for like $120.

We wanted to lease a car but were told that it was not an option here...We bought a used car instead...There are always people trying to sell their car at the last minute before they leave the country and bargains are found if you look around...Also I heard that Koreans don't like used cars so they don't hold their value as well as in other parts of the world. We got a good buy on our little Daewoo Kalos at a used car lot and it only had 15,000 kilometers on it...I'll sell it cheap after having it for 3 years but I'm sure it will work out to be dirt cheap compared to a new vehilcle lease.

A serious waste of money, even back home.

If you want that new car smell, just buy a Matiz. They're 8mil (or maybe less now) or so...

Otherwise, just buy a used car in decent shape. You can drive it like it's disposable. It's quite liberating.

I wouldn't lease anything here as a foreigner.

Or buy a slightly older Matiz.

The resale value on them is quite high. Buy one that's just a few years old with low miles. I've owned mine for almost 2 1/2 years now, and I think they thing has only lost about $200 in value.

I guess I'll ask around.
If I could buy a used Matiz for 4 million or just lease a Sonata for 550 a month and 5 mill deposit for a couple years then I'm going for the Sonata for safety and size reasons, let alone how it looks or how it drives.

If anyone could recommend a good foreigner friendly place to lease from please let me know. I was just interested in details and paperwork etc.

Why not just buy a used sonata for 4 million? Is there something I'm missing?

If it's size and safety you're after, then there are plenty of used cars around in great shape, as the rise in fuel cost is encouraging people to buy smaller cars.

There are a few cars right now in the Buy/Sell forum that would fit the bill for significantly less than your budget.

If you only need a car for 2 years or so, it's really the only sensible option.

Besides, I remember this issue came up once on Dave's... and the consensus there was the same as this thread... 1) hard to do as a foreigner, 2) prohibitively expensive, 3) low availability
