Eating out in the foreigner ghetto can be a deeply disappointing experience. I wish someone had written me a list of the good places to eat when I got here. Please add your own recommendations, I want to know more good places to go. If youre recommending somewhere, try to give the location.

THE WHITE LIST
Food that makes you happy deep deep inside.

Flying Pan Blue
(Go out exit 2 of Itaewon station, walk up the street on your left, this place is down a short flight of stairs, just past My Thai)
Flavours and ingredients you had forgotten how much you missed. Avocados and walnuts and really good cheese. Mostly a breakfast and lunch place. A bit pricy but sooo good.

Petra
(On the hill above the highway between Noksapyeong station and Itaewon, its on the second floor.)
Unbelievably good middle-eastern food. Order anything on the menu (except the shish kebab) and it will knock your socks off.

The Iranian
(Go out exit 1 of Itaewon station and walk straight, its up one of the many side streets on your right, this particular side street has a blue sign that says Pacific Shopping on its corner. Walk up the steep hill, the Iranian Food restaurant is on your right.)
Freshly made bread, salad and yoghurt with simple but awesome grilled lamb, chicken or fish. The grilled salmon is particulary fantastic. And it costs 7,000won.

Bhuddas Belly
(Either the one upstairs in Itaewon or the one near Noksapyeong station opposite the army base)
Thai food. Order the Pad Thai or the green curry.

Comedor (sp?)
(Approximately opposite the Wolfhound pub)
Paraguayan restaurant. Really good empanadas and plates of the day. They charge half what everyone else in Itaewon charges for a fresh juice and the woman who runs it is lovely.

THE PALE GREY LIST
When you are feeling weak and cant face kalbi or bibimbap again.

The Take-away joints on the street opposite the army base
Istanbul okay kebabs and falafel, the fish and chips is identical to what the Wolfhound does (i.e. not great) but at least its cheap.
Taco okay Mexican

Itaewon Pub Food
The Wolfhound it would be nice if they did vegetables but still okay pub meals
Three Alley ditto

Indigo Caf
(HBC main street)
Bare pass [edit: pass retracted due to food poisoning incident. don't order anything involving eggs]

THE BLACK LIST
Never again. Dont make the mistakes I did.

Phillies
(HBC main street)
If you go past at the right time of day youll see the kitchen staff eating Korean takeaway. Everything negative about the word expat is captured by the food at Phillies.

Geckos
(Itaewon)
Dont do it.

Marrakech Nights
Ive only tried the one on the hill between Noksapyeong and Itaewon but the food was so awful that I wont be going into any others.

Santorini (?)
(Itaewon, upstairs behind the Hamilton Hotel)
Greek food overpriced and kinda greasy and stale, not recommended.

Roll In: California Rolls
(Itaewon , same corner as Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf)
Okay, you should never go into anything that says California rolls but what they do with sweetened mayonaisse and roe is truly vomitous

Sortinos
(Itaewon)
Overpriced, overrated and boring Italian food.

Any Korean pizza joint I mean any. I dont know what that white and yellow stuff is that they put on pizzas here. I dont want to know.

and finally

The Franchises
Popeyes
South of the Border
Outback Steakhouse

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Taj Palace - for some of the best Indian food around. The curries are rich and delicious and the nan is light and crispy. You'll love it.

It's runned by some really nice people from Kashmir. To go there, go out of exit 3 of Itaewon station. Walk past Starbucks to the corner and turn right. Then walk up the street 1 1/2 blocks. It's on the right. Phone is 03-790-5786 Happy eating!

I don't live in Seoul but was just at the Frying Plan Blue this past weekend when I visited. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious.

Pricey, yes. But, well worth it if you've got some extra money to burn!

There is a nice Indian food restaurant in Itaewon that is nice.

I also like Ashleys -- it is a chain in Korea that is somewhat Western.

Para is also a good restaurant of the Shabu Shabu style and is very Asian in style.

There's a nice Halal restaurant called Dubai. In addition, Salam, up at the Mosque is really tasty.

The food at the New Phillies must have gone down hill since a few years ago. John Redmond gave it a decent rating for the English Spectrum and the owner was a somewhat reserved but polite guy towards me both times I visited the pub.

What's wrong with Geckos? The atmosphere is usually buzzing there on a Sunday and their burgers are great (if a little soggy).

Really? That's kind of good to hear. The previous guy... was so rude, just all about the money. Kicked my friends out when they weren't drinking (they were with a group of people), practically assaulted my man when he went in there with a soda can in his hand to ask a question, didn't bother to ask me to step out of his way when he needed to get outside, just shoved past causing me to spill my drink on a friend I was talking to... etc etc etc... Beyond rude.

this place is going downhill fast... the owners of Ssen and the new burger joint. all are looking in a bad state of affairs.

As for Indigo, the owner is a racist, the service crap, overpriced and horrible quality. The owner is also the biggest tightwad and has offended nearly all the business owners in Haebangchon

Are the owners of Ssen, Indigo, and the new burger joint expatriates? I can recall when a trip to Haebongchon to visit the old Phillies, Ssen, and Chakra was good night out for sure. It was not a very expensive time. This made it even sweeter.
