ok, so there was a film I really wanted to see, is a bit dated, and I wanted the larger more than 700mb file - the torrent I downloaded gave me multiple "cd" files in consequective numbers i.e.,

CD1/vm-uf.cd1.r00

etc.

what do I do with these? am I supposed to burn a dvd or something?

my "file info" utliity tells me they are unix executable files - there were many seeds and leeches there so I know they are good -

help oh knowledgeable torrent experts!! Shocked Shocked

the files have just been broken into smaller files, its done to help the torrent transfer....

anyways to your problem.

find the file in each folder which either says .rar or .r01 or .r00, which ever is there.
Youll need winrar to open the file. Its free to download

http://www.rarsoft.com/download.htm

Open the .rar file, inside the compressed file youll see your movie.
Extract it to a folder.
your done.
The output should be a divx or xvid avi file....thatll be it.

If there are any errors on the file, it will tell you during the extraction process, also if there is a password which people sometimes put on it might sting you with that at the end....but it should be fine.

Thats all.

surprised youve never come across it before.

I knew they are partial files, so to speak, and I always stay away from those downloads, this time I wanted the real deal so I opted for the download, but I didn't check the extensions.

when I go to the link you provided it there are a multitude of downloads - the only one designated for mac os x (me) is a trial version, which I suppose is ok if I only use it once -

but am I going to have to do this for each one of these files - there are a LOT of them. and then what? does it put the movie together somehow? I'm not going to watch it in bits and pieces am I??

thanks for answering my qs...!

They are not "partial' files they are complete but compressed ( that is if the download is finished). Go to the first one and open it with whatever viewer you wish to view it in that will open them all and then you can watch the movie.

No you dont have to do it for every file. when you open the first file and extract the movie it will pull out the whole movie.
You only have to extract it from the first file.

Those files are the single file, broken into 15MB chunks to help compressions and to aid with transfers. But the way they are made allows winrar to see the whole file from the first and extract it all in one shot.

As for the trial, it is 30 days, but after you can still use it. Just close the Please Buy Now box and it still functions.

If you don't have Winrar installed and working on a regular basis, then you can't view high quality video.

For reasons unknown to me, most HD video and games from torrent sites is delivered in Winrar compressed files.

Does anyone know why this is?

Why not just upload a file to a torrent site in uncompressed form? The size difference isn't that much. An 8GB .h264 movie file uncompressed is usually less that 10% bigger than the Winrar compressed file. Why bother?

There are dozens of compressing technologies. RAR is one of them. ZIP is another and is more common. WinRAR happens to be one of the more popular applications for uncompressing RAR files but there are others, including ones for the Mac.

its all to do with the warez 'scene' and the rules setup by pirates and groups to govern a release....

just bullshit they decide on and like to follow.
It does serve some purpose, but for most people its unnoticeable and not really important.

torrents don't need .rar, but FTP does so that you don't have to download the whole thing if part of it goes funky in the downloading, only have to download the specific rar part

torrents automatically check to make sure it's an exact copy

seriously, where does one find a command line on a mac? and how am I supposed to do this - that is - do I type the corresponding command, space, file name? is it going to find the fie properly or what?

this is really difficult - I hope it's worth it!

thanks again !

In the days when cable wasn't as mainstream as today, and dropouts where often, in order to minimize the chances off downloading everything again, one compressed the files in this manner.

This seriously improved the sharing of files.

It did for me in the 90's!
