A buddy of mine wants to buy a guitar. He wants an electic acoustic of moderate quality. He wants to go someplace near Insadong that he recalls from several years back. He said it's a multistory place chocked full of goodies. Anyone know the name, location, hours of operation and if this place is a reputable place to buy from? Hell, if you can attach an English link that would get 'er done.

We are in Songdo, Incheon, so if you know of a more better-er place, that would be good too.

Cheers,
Crockpot

you speak of nagwon music arcade. as far as it being reputable, it's hard to say since it's one of those marketplaces full of stalls run by different people.

PM Harpeau on this site, if he doesn't have a guitar that is worthy of your time, he'll point you in the direction of someone at nagwon who will sell you something good and probably provide some sort of after-sale support should something go wrong.

as well, steve kim of MD music shop in hongdae is an actual luthier who builds his own stuff (mainly electric) but will provide all manner of support. i believe he's near exit 5 at honggik U. station. he speaks decent english and is very cool.

hope that helps. if it were me i'd go to MD.

Yea, Harpeau has been selling guitars on this site for years. I've never heard a bad word about him.

be careful with nakwon.. its a very cool place but if you're not careful you'll end up paying more than you should. its best to go with a korean friend who knows about guitars, and also check prices online before you go. a lot of these nakwon shops have websites so you can see how much things should cost.
one good way would also just be to go to buy/sell/trade on here, or other ex-pat forums. when i left, i sold one of my guitars for 50,000 won (fender squier copy with a slightly dodgy pickup selector), and gave the other one away (yamaha acoustic). there'll always be foreigners coming and going who have to get rid of their stuff, and i'm sure a smart person could take advantage of that.

I spoke with Harpeau and he was fantastic and helpful. My buddy's schedule got kind of crazy and we did not go look but I will take the above advice as well as Harpeaus. I'm going to lend my friend my Martin to play for a day or two so he can get the feel of a pretty nice guitar and then start from there.

Thanks for all he kind words. One hing to keep in mind: when you find a place that you really like. go to the same shop and stick with one place while you are here. You'll find it easier to get discounts, etc.

What I do at Nagwon I do all of my guitar stuff in one shop. It's been that way for about 10 years or so. They're very good and I'm very loyal to them. (Unless it's something that they don't have.)

Feel free to PM me or E-mail me with any questions.
Cheers!
