Both this year and next Chuseok falls on the weekend, so only a 3-day holiday (13, 14, 15) with one of them being a work day.  |

Yup, if you spend enough years in K-land it all works out.
Two years ago at Chuseok I went to Mongolia for nine days. This year, it looks like (according to my school's calendar) I'll get five day off. However, this is subject to change... there's nothing like being able to make plans.  |

Ok let's look at the 2009 paid national holidays that are vital to most teachers' well being.
occur on weekdays total = 6
January 1 (Thursday) New Year's Day
January 26 (Monday) Seollal
January 27 (Tuesday) Seollal
May 5 (Tuesday) Buddha's Birthday
October 5 (Monday) Chuseok
December 25(Friday) Christmas
Occur on weekends total = 8
January 25 (Sunday) Seollal
March 1 (Sunday) Independence Day
May 2 (Saturday) Children's Day
June 6 (Saturday) Memorial Day
August 15 (Saturday) Liberation Day
October 3 (Saturday) Foundation Day
October 3 (Saturday) Chuseok
October 4 (Sunday) Chuseok
If you're at an academy in Korea in 2009, you'll likely be working some 3+ months without a day off. On the other hand, the great nation of Japan has 14 National holidays that occur on weekdays in 2009. They seem to be spread out better throughout the year.
Admittedly, I'll probably stay in Korea for a few more years, but it's something to consider for people trying to choose between Korea and Japan for their next contract. |

There are no guarantees, but it's more likely than at a private 'academy'. |

I feel bad for the teachers hurt by this situation, but I can only feel so bad because I'm at a unigwon...
I don't want holidays during the week because they cut into my overtime. hahaha
I have a base contract of 16 hours a week and then anything more than that is overtime. I get killed when I have a holiday during the week because then I fill my 16 hours on the first 4 days, and the day off takes away a substantial amount of money I want to earn.
God bless holidays on the weekends, or during my vacation. hehe |

I like the way holidays are managed in Thailand. If one falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it is moved to Friday/Monday respectively. April, May and December turned out to be almost more time off than at work  |
