Mine just did and I'm quite angry. Yes, he just walked in without knocking or ringing the doorbell. I was fixing to watch a movie and this man just appears in front of me and I was like, "who are you? what are you doing?" I felt like punching him out. He gives me my utility bill and I tell him thanks and show him the door, but he just won't leave.

Since I clean on Sundays, he came in to inspect unannounced on Saturday at 4:30PM and gigs me on a bag of trash, dirty pan, and a floor needing vacuuming. I get pissed, but he doesn't know any English so I call my co-teacher to explain to him it's not OK to just come waltzing in unannounced to do an inspection, especially late in the week as not only do I clean on Sundays, but also it's widely known Koreans do as well. Not to mention, I have to keep my trash until Tuesday nights due to once a week service and it shouldn't be a problem since it's contained in a bag.

I directly told my co-teacher this is bullshit and I'm angry about this disruption and willing to move if he's that much of a funny guy. Yes, he's sitting on my bed right now grunting around. She says Korean culture is different and I'm like I've heard that one before, but this is unacceptable and I won't take it. So I put the land lord on the phone with my co-teacher and she explains to him that I clean on Sundays and don't do unannounced inspections, especially on Saturdays when I'm relaxing and sloppy from a work week. He could come in on a Monday while I'm at work. Couldn't he? Sure can, because he's an old retired man who only preaches at a church on Sunday mornings. And I wouldn't even have to be here as that's what my former land lords did though I disagree with the infringing privacy power landlords take upon themselves in Korea. I would say that's reasonably fair enough for him to come early in the week as in Korea land lords can just come in and infringe on your privacy so I can't kick him out or say he can't come in.

Is that correct that landlords can just come waltzing in, sit on your bed, gig you out on your bag of trash, disrupt your relaxing Saturday afternoon, and do whatever the hell they please at any time?

Tell us your absurd landlord stories...

I agree, totally uncalled for. My advice is make sure on Monday to have someone call the landlord for you and tell him in Korean that you consider this an invasion of your space. He needs to be told if he wants to "inspect" your apartment for some reason, he should make an appointment at least 24 hours in advance.

I've never had this happen to me, but you have to put your foot down so it doesn't happen again.

My understanding, as told by Korean friends, is that this is one of those "on the books but unenforced" laws. I've been assured that landlords are NOT supposed to come in unannounced, but I've had it happen to me at all three of the apartments I've had in Korea (as well as being accomplice to unannounced walkins while being shown apartments by realtors).

Have an airhorn next to the door and when he walks in, UNANNOUNCED, he gets it full blast. Apologize and say it's a reflex. That'll be the last time he walks in unannounced.

BTW, if you think I'm joking then you don't know me very well. Wink

You have a three bedroom apt. It isn't cheap. The school's paying for it. You're a public school teacher. You're an adult. With that in mind the landlord needs to be educated.

Deadbolt on and you keep the key. Landlord doesn't get a key. All you have to do is clean the place before you leave in a year. He can 'check/inspect' the apartment then. The landlord is an asshole. He ought to mind his own business and get a life.

Shit stuff like this pisses me off. I can just see it. Gotta get your school to help you with the landlord. Don't take any bullshit.

Guy, using his landlord key, walks right into Sojourner's apt appearing out of nowhere and you suggest he offer the landlord a beer and shoot the shit? The landlord knows he's out of line but is just being annoying because he can. Sitting on Sojourner's bed? Won't leave. Goddamn it that SOB needs to be told off severely and know his place. He gets 450 bucks a month or whatever it is from the schoolboard. He DOESN'T get to come in to the apt until the year is up, final inspection. I can't stand shit like this.

Deadbolt and only Sojourner has the key. He has the public school board to vouch for him and push that landlord around.

That's right, it's not cheap as I have to pay $300 to $500 per month. My utility bill is $300 without running the hot water heater like I'm doing in the Summer and keeping my lights mostly turned off at all times.

I think I made it loud and clear today with how upset I was when I called my co-teacher and told her this is bullshit and my dirty pan and bag of trash is none of his business as well as unannounced inspections. She said she explained to him on the phone that this won't work like this.

Yep, not to mention, while the apartment was not horrible, it was worse than I normally ever let it get as I'd been sick all week and working so I was messier and had a few tissues laying around too while doing the minimal amount knowing I would be feeling better by this weekend so I'd take care it on Sunday. I then felt like drinking a 6 pack of Budweiser last night and had the cans sitting out on the counter and a half of pizza so it looked really sloppy like a college dorm after a Friday night. I also had a dirty frying pan with grease in it sitting out that I had just used 2 hours earlier to cook lunch in so it looked gross.

This really made me out to look a lazy man with disgusting living habits when that's far from the truth; a real loss of face. I voiced myself loud and clear. I'm rather pissed the hell off as I probably will get evicted over this not to mention I had to call my fucking co-teacher late Saturday afternoon since the land lord didn't speak any English while he just rattled off all this Korean really quickly while I got pissed. I understood though what he was talking about as he walked around and pointed at things with his voice inflections, body language, and other sounds. I had to call as the situation was just degenerating.

Yes, my co-teacher did explain everything to him and he ended up shaking my hand at the end to diffuse my anger though I think he's looking to pick at me as a reason to get me out any way as he really did a detailed half hour inspection.

I ended up cleaning my kitchen after he left which only took a half hour so it wasn't a big deal as I'd just let it go some I was sick this past week as I normally clean as I go and then just clean everything and the floor on Sundays.

I thought the Army was bad, at least they gave you prior notice of inspections. This Korean apartment shit is ridiculous, unreasonable, and absurd. I bet almost any foreigner would had rejected, got pissed, and some might even challenged a fight as this was a bit rude, aggressive, confrontational, inconsiderate, somewhat hostile, and threatening. They give the land lords to much power or simply you're expected to take it up the bum in stride. I refuse to be controlled and walked around on in this bow legged manner. Well, this sort of thing is what separates the West from the East besides the types of food. I won't go into that right now...

Lame. Once you start playing the 'you're an idiot' game, Spliff, you lose. You know that, you've been on Dave's awhile. I quite enjoy your sense of humour but sometimes, at times like this, you show your weakness. That's ok. But, like I said, there's absolutely no reason that landlord needs to come into Sojourner's apt until the end of the year. Especially that landlord. Just walking in, sitting on his bed, won't leave. Would you want someone like that poking around your place and stuff? Creepy.

I love the 'You're an Idiot' game. I finish every class at my hagwon with it.

For the record, I'm not Spliff. My dad can speak for himself.

Your weakness is that you don't understand sarcasm.
