I've made a couple of long blog posts on using the Olympics in the classroom as a teachable moment. Lots of material there in our Resources Share area for teaching English through the Olympics. BAAM and Jeopardy games. Presentations, Bingo (complete picture sets) etc......
Here is my own quite exhaustive list of searching two weeks for the BEST videos on the Olympics. I used a few from here on my list . Thanks....
If anyone knows my sporting background, I bet you can guess my fav!

Beijing literally means "Northern capital". Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic of China. It is the nation's political, economic, cultural and educational center as well as China's most important center for international trade and communications. The city covers an area of more than 16,410 square kilometers and has a population of 14.93 million people. Beijing's long and illustrious history started some 500,000 years ago. It is here that the ancestors of modern Homo sapiens, Peking men, lived in caves. Records show that Beijing has been an inhabited city for more than three thousand years and has endured invasions by warlords and foreign powers, devastating fires, the rise and fall of powerful imperial dynasties and has emerged each time as a strong and vibrant city. For more than 800 years, Beijing was a capital city - from the Yuan Dynasty, the Ming and Qing dynasties. Thirty-four emperors have lived and ruled the nation in Beijing and it has been an important trading city from its earliest days.
Although now Beijing is a modern and fashionable city complete with a full 21st Century vitality, you can experience authentic Beijing life and become acquainted with 'old Beijing' by exploring its many teahouses, temple fairs, Beijing's Hutong and Courtyard and enjoy the Peking Opera. Add any or all of these to your Beijing tour and you will leave with a feeling of special appreciation in your heart for this ancient city that has truly seen it all and tells its story with matchless grace, charm and vigor.

Beijing Olympics Theme song:
"Welcome to Beijing "
Another morning is coming, and brings in the fresh air
Our friendship will never change, just like the fragrance of green tea
My door is always open for you, and I'm here for you with open arms
You'd know me better when you hugged me, and you will love it here
Be my guest no matter you are from home and abroad
You are here as promised, friends we welcome you
I grow green plant at home to show you all the legends in the past
I want to plant in the soil to make you good memories
Friends and strangers, you are all my guests, and please be at home
No matter how many times we meet, there are still a lot to talk about
Welcome to Beijing, we will show you a brand new place
The charm of Beijing is full of life
Welcome come to Beijing, let's breath together in the sunshine
We want to make new record on this yellow soil
I always keep my doors open, to welcome the world
The old ages is smiling like youth, to welcome that day
We are all friends, please make yourself at home
With all the smiles, I am here waiting for you----By Hangeng
Welcome to Beijing, May my music touch you
Let's working hard and try to go beyond ourselves
Welcome to Beijing, it's great to be able to have dream
Just be brave and there will be a miracle |

Slightly less classic is the "dream team" cloaking themselves in American flags at the Gold Medal ceremony for basketball...... to hide the reebok (or other) logo to keep their own cozy deals with Nike on the straight and narrow.
1984 Summer games- McDonalds gives food away bases on US medals- and the Soviet Bloc all pretty much pull a no-show. talk about a free junk food summer...... |
I totally remember that McDonalds promo. "When America Wins, You Win." One of the gals at our school was working there and she swooped about 150 of those scratch off cards and gave them to us.
Bronze=coke
Silver=fries
Gold=burger
Here's another moment, I think it was '88. Greg Louganis fulled cracked his dome on the platform dive.
Koreans will love this one....1992 Barcelona Marathon
Gold: 황영조 first Korean to win it since 송기정 in 1936.
Silver: Koichi Morista....Japanese guy so they got over.
and the wild card.
Bronze: (if memory serves me) Stefan Freigang, Deutschland. That's where Ito Hirobumi was sent after the Meji Restoration to learn about European affairs. He later set out to annex Chosun into the Japanese Empire and 안중근 did away with him at the Harbin train station.
So there is the big tie-in.
On a tangent, I always find similarities between the Imperial Japanese Government and the Second Reich though there aren't many resourses pertaining to the similarities. So I'm kinda talking outta my ass.
Make sure to tune in for the riveting coverage of archery, badminton and ping-pong. And don't forget 장미란 |

Donovan Bailey in Atlanta 96 winning the 100m gold.
A personal favorite is a guy from my high school sealing Canada's curling gold in Torino 06.

I've updated the Olympic page http://eflclassroom.ning.com/wpage/olympics
Lots of TIME essays about the top 100 athletes to look out for. Also, flash presentations of each sport. Pretty cool and a great way for students to learn about each sport (or the teacher!).
New videos in the player....
Let the games begin, can't wait!
