|
|
Well,
I recently took a trip to Osaka for vacation, and man oh man was it hard not to constantly compare it to Korea. I liked Osaka. I liked Japan, and the Japanese. There was a calmness and civility there that I find so lacking here. For instance, more than once, my GF and I were in a bar or restaurant and I would go..."God it's quiet. I mean, music is playing, but my ears aren't being raped"
I went to their version of an electronics mart...and again, was shocked. They had brands other than japanese brands! It really put into perspective the absolute fear that Koreans have of competition. Right next to all the NTT Docomo phones, was a whole aisle of Apple stuff. And guess what, the Iphone is doing well there. Also, the abscence of 90 guys selling the exact same thing, yet yelling as though they'll give you a deal, was refreshing.
Also:
No gawking
No giggling when someone had to use their englishee
No sewer gas smells
The only downsides:
The subway is wayyyy more confusing. Way way way more.
The girls are...hold onto your hats asiaphiles...not that hot on average. However, that's tempered with the observation that they're probably a bit more interesting to speak to on average. Also, much less plastic surgery. I like that...I feel like I'm seeing the truth.
I could see "playing out" Osaka after like 3 weeks. It's not small...but it's small.
Do I even need to mention how expensive it is? We were dropping $10's like $1's and $100's like $10's. |

If you or anyone else travel minded has a PDA, I can strongly reccomend Tube 2 from Visual IT http://www.visualit.co.uk/
It has maps for many cities worldwide. (No Osaka, unless it's part of the Tokyo system) and it lets you put in a start and end and shows your route. Its been invaluable to me in my Seoul trips.

Isn't it like the second largest city in Japan? How is that small in any way? |

I just got back from Tokyo and you just can't help but compare the two.
Seoul wins when it comes to the overall price of goods: i.e. subway, food, taxis, ect....
Especially food. It's much cheaper in Korea and IMO tastes better too.
However, when it comes to everything else, Japan wins hands down. At least in Tokyo.
- the people are much nicer
- the kids hardly gawk at you and not one ran up to me with the "hellooo"
- Japanese women (at least in tokyo) are better looking
- peoples styles are much more diverse
- the architecture is more interesting
- the people overall just seem more comfortable wth foreigners (at least on the outside) |

You really think the food in Korea is better? Wow.
In Japan:
The sushi was superior. I've never had squid that was so fresh that it tasted like pork or chicken.
No dishonest "fusion" BS that exists because they're simply too cheap or ingnorant to get the actual ingredients.
Less "making a big deal out of nothing", i.e, "regionalism". |

I'm just saying you get more bang for your buck in Korea. Plus I love all the Korean side dishes. |

Subjective, and you're totally entitled to your opinion, but I have no idea how you could find Korean food better... Tokyo has probably the best cuisine on the planet, and not only Japanese, but international food too. It can be pricey, but not always, and I find is worth the extra cost given how much higher the standards are. I think the food in Tokyo blows away that in Seoul by a long shot.

Yeah the Korean side dishes are nice, I'll grant that. But as for getting a bang for your buck, you'll find if you live there that there are places you can go and get stuffed for quite cheap. Shinjuku (where I used to live in Tokyo) for example has loads of excellent lunch buffets , often quite cheap -- I used to know a sukiyaki place that was all you can eat for just 1200 yen (and good tasting). There's so much competition in Tokyo that a lot of places have promos and keep their prices down. Like anywhere it's just hard to be in the know if you don't live there. |

The only thing that really bothered me about Tokyo were the east African hustlers.
Now some of them were funny, but it did get annoying after a while. |

That is what is stopping me from going to Japan. I know if I went to Japan, I would constantly look at my wallet and bank account, being too focused on cash to enjoy the trip.
I hear to take a trip to Japan, you need to budget $1,000 per week. (including rail pass, flight/ferry) |

Yeah, I was in Tokyo for the break too. It makes Seoul look like a toilet.
If I were to live there, I'd try to station myself near the beer museum. Where else can you get a glass of guiness for $2.50? |

Just stay away from Roppongi then, that's pretty well the only place they are (they own a lot of the crappy clubs there). |

i'm in osaka prefecture now. i really dont see the city being "played out" in three weeks. in re: night life, the main drinking district(namba/shinsaibashi) is probably double the size and number of bars as gangnam, itaewon, and hongdae combined. and yeah, the money flies...but i did find a horrid hip hop club offering all-you-can-drink for 3000 yen, if you can stomach the atmosphere. then there are also the 380 yen places where all drinks/food are 380 yen.
if you get sick of drinking, kyoto's an hour away. hundreds of significant shrines and temples...as opposed to maybe a couple of dozen in seoul.
and i keep bumping into great eats all over the place. conveyor belt sushi, yakitori...hell even the train station in my podunk suburb has an indian restaurant...with an indian owner.
going out to eat is more expensive than seoul. i definitely eat at home a lot more here. but you know, going to the supermarket, some things in fact seem cheaper here. western spirits and meat come to mind. the produce is high priced, though. it's a game of give and take.
only one month in though, so we'll see. |

I went to Tokyo went the new Michelin guides had come out and Tokyo restaurants had cleaned the clock of Parisian restaurants. Of course, eating in a Michelin starred restaurant in Tokyo is not usually doable for us folks teaching in Korea.
I loved Tokyo. At first the subway was confusing because it has 2 or 3 lines for no apparent reason. The food was spectacular, and not unreasonable, i found good 10 dollarish meals. Take out tempura was ultra cheap and delicious, though there were huges lines at the place.
One of the most delicious things I've ever eaten was raw scallop sushi. Incredible.
Sushi was great but so expensive it didn't fill me up. I saw some French restaurants but they were closed so I really would have like to have tried Japanese French food, they have a good rep (ever see the show Iron Chef?)
Everything else (including the subway and especially taxis) very expensive.
If the money thing wasn't so much better in Korea I'd opt for Japan. Although politeness can be deceiving. A Korean student of mine who lived there for years said they have a "show face" "real feelings face" divide and the politeness may be phony. No idea if this is true. But it's better than rudeness.
Still, Korea suits me fine. I can't abide over-paying for everyday items. |
