So while buying some new clothes for Korea, I found out threadless.com re-stocked a shirt I've wanted for awhile and bought it:
Communist Party*
http://www.threadless.com/product/383/The_Communist_Party
It looks awesome on me BTW
My brother happened to see it and is convinced I'm gonna get into all sorts of trouble with the locals becuase of you know....the Korean war and all...plus the whole commie north.....
Any truth to that statement? Do koreans like threadless as much as I do?
*It's a picture pun for those who don't get it...and for those of you out of the loop, threadless is a popular t-shirt retailer online, but now has stores around Chicago as well.... |

Thanks for clearing that up for us.
I can't imagine anyone will care. I wouldn't wear anything with a Japanese imperial flag though |

I almost bought that when I was at home (Chicago) but I didn't and now I regret it. A few of my friends had those last winter. What was shipping like? |

I'm in the states right now but shipping was $4. The threadless tees fit real nice too....some are slightly longer than other though...fits alot better than most shirts I've bought.
I was wearing it thinking" ya know....this shirt might just get me in trouble with some adjosshi who has frequent war flashbacks" so I posted the thread. |

No, it probably won't get you lynched. But if you start a thread with "So..." again, it might just do the trick. |

Is Kim Jong-il on the shirt? Nope, you're fine. There will be testy old uptight conservatives anywhere you og in the world. The only questionable inclusion would be that thug, Stalin, but I doubt anyone could possibly take that shirt seriously.
And they won't lynch you in Korea. They have to make it look like an accident, so expect them to suffocate you in bed and then put a running fan in your room to evade suspicion. |

Communism is technically illegal in South Korea, as is anything glorifying it. As is importing anything glorifying it. As are foreigners making political statements.
Find the right person with the right burr in his ass and it may mean trouble.
That said, chances are nobody will get it. The enforcement of the anti-communist law is pretty lax these days as well..
Still, if you see a truck that says '멸공합시다' on it, I'd stay away. |

well one time security wouldn't let me on a plane because i had on earrings with little plastic pistols on them, you can find someone who is offended by anything... but honestly if someone is offended who cares, and with that shirt no one will be, North Koreans are our brothers! |

Considering some of the Korean english shirts here, its pretty tame.
I espeically love the picture in the new groove magazine of a couple shirts that says (for him) SHE LOVES THE COCK with an arrow going left.
and (for her) I LOVE THE COCK.
or the ajumma wearing the US BEEF MAKES ME HORNY
shirt. |

Yeah, yeah, yeah, everything's illegal here. Driving on sidewalks, operating whorehouses, going into bars when you're only 15 (16 in Chinese/Korean), the list goes on. It doesn't mean squat. You can also just ignore most of the cops anyway. I just give them a *beep* you look when they hassle me about jaywalking. |

You'll be lucky if they even get the reference, let alone give a shit. Your brother needs to chill out.
And yes, Korea does love Threadless. So much so that you can buy ripoffs at the clothing markets here... I've even had students wearing Threadless ripoffs under their school uniforms. Mind you all of MY Threadless shirts are the genuine article (not sure why you'd pay 10-15 bucks for a knockoff when you can wait for a sale and get the real deal for 10). |

that shirt is really tame compared to some of the ones for sale on Kao San Road in Bangkok - I took pix of some of them - my fave was someone pointing a gun at the head of GWB with the writing "save the world"
another one had a shot of a women's lower half (in panties) and a sign that said "good Bush" and yes - a shot of GWB - "bad Bush"
for the uninitiated, you wear these t-shirts (and the one in the OP) at your fave demo or protest or rally - or, as the case may be, national party nomination event.
