I am just curious if it is possible to break a GEPIK contract. I have only been here 2 months, and although everything is great in my school, I would just really want to live in Seoul.. It appears I am heading into the city every chance that I have and am spending a fortune on buses and hotels.
I know this sound incredibly irresponsible, and I dont even know if I could go through breaking a contract and leaving my friends here in the small city, but I am just curious, and want to weigh my options..

Thank you.

Give them the proper notice, according to your contract.

Whom will you work for in Seoul? Academy or public school? Are you connected to the subway system? How long does it take you to get to Seoul (City Hall, Hongdae, etc)?

It is possible to break any contract including GEPIK. On the other hand you may not be able to get a new visa until the old one expires. Why not simply finish the contract? If things go well you would be able to use them as a reference for a better job in Seoul next time around...as opposed to quitting the contract after two months.

And there is no guarantee that a job in Seoul would be better, you could end up working at a place where your co-workers resent foreigners. A good job here (where you like most things) is not that easy to come by.

Yes you can end your GEPIK contract early with the appropriate amount of notice ... But there are consequences.

If it is within the first 6 months you will have to pay back the full amount of your airfare.

You may even have to go back to your home country to get a new visa if you want to come back ... Because you would not have been here long enough to possibly transfer the visa to a new employer (need 9 months for that)

Another employer may even be hesitant to employ someone who has left a job after such a short time.

You are also in the early part of being here ... which is the time that it can be the hardest .... and you may find that you will feel better about it if you give it some time.

Assuming that you have no major problems with the school I would really encourage you to consider not breaking the contract. Having successfully completed a contract will help you to get a better job next time in Seoul if that is what you want.

If spending weekends in Seoul is what is costing lot of money ... maybe find out about some of the cheaper accommodation options. You may find that you can do both.

Just think seriously about it before you do it. Consider the positives and negatives. Can you afford to pay back the airfare? Are you likely to change your mind while working out the 2 month notice period which is standard in GEPIK contracts? If you have to go back home to get a new visa can you afford to do it?

Icicle called it. Your main reason for quitting this job is very flimsy. To quit over this, in my opinion, would be very unprofessional.

Try to stick it out. Stay away from Seoul and those love hotels. Find a new hobby to keep you occupied on weekends.

I really appreciate the feedback you all have given me.. I, in no way want to screw my current employer, or act in an inappropriate way, so I have read what you have all said and will stick it out.. I guess the main reason for me wanting to leave is getting a girlfriend who lives in Seoul.. I know that is lame, but that is the real truth..
It is what it is..
Thanks again to all of you who have replied to my post..

That's as good a reason as any to quit a job and move. But realistically you've probably been going out a month (you've been here two, right?) and who knows where you guys will be after the 2 month notice period is up. Nothing feels worse than changing your whole life around for a girl...only to break up (and even worse, if it's before you've even reaped the benefits..)

I'm actually in the same boat as you and make the trip up to Seoul 2-3 times a week (she comes down 1-3 times a week). I don't know where you are located, but there are a couple of things that can make it alot easier. For example: If you're in Suwon, take the train to Seoul - it takes less than half the time of the subway and its comfortable ride...vs a cramped subway. Take the bus, often the red express buses take about 45mins to South and SE Seoul. Let her come and visit you on occassion, sure it might be a bit more boring, but if you share the travelling it feels like less of a burden. Meet in a place in the middle...see above.

Unless you're in Pyeongtaek or Yangju, you should be within a reasonable distance of Seoul and its a workable arrangement.
