I'm planning on traveling by train to Hiroshima from Fukuoka later this month - I know many of you have visited Hiroshima and I really want to do so also -

any comments about various places to visit there? Is Nagasaki a must see if one is interested in the atomic blast? that is, I know there's a museum in Hiroshima, what about Nagasaki?

does anyone know how long the train (bullet) takes to get there? any hotel recommendations?

anything else please post.

It's about 90 minutes between Hiroshima and Fukuoka, and two hours between Nagasaki and Fukuoka. Nagasaki has an atomic bomb museum and a Peace Park, although the museum at Hiroshima is a little more extensive. There's also some interesting historical sites in Nagasaki concerning Dutch trade outposts, and a boat tour to Battleship Island (Hashima) that's interesting if you're not prone to getting seasick.
In Hiroshima, you can take a good day trip to Miyajima and try to avoid the overly agressive deer that roam the streets.

I'm not sure what your budget is for hotels. I stayed at the JAL Nagasaki, which was nice - big rooms, new, modern and spotlessly clean and the Arc in Hiroshima, which was none of those things, and should be avoided at all costs.

hey thanks for the info especially about nagasaki - I didn't know if there was anything there or it was all in Hiroshima

as for my hotel budget I have no idea how much to plan for at all. I've paid all kinds of prices in Japan - well, not more than $60 I suppose - but from cheap up to that amount - which is a LOT for me because I usualy hunt down something reasonable.

would like to spend no more than 40-50 if possible; even less if any inns are around ? anyone?

I stayed at a Toyoko Inn at Hiroshima-eki Minamiguchi-migi, it was Y12,000 for 2 nights and I was very happy. the room was quite small but it was really clean (or looked clean) and I was happy with that. My place also gave free Japanese breakfast and curry dinner which can be nice (the cook is a cute little lady ) Oh and close to the Shukkein (Garden) and JR station.

I didn't find much to do in that area so I spent the morning on Miyajima, the afternoon all around Hirorhima (peace park, peace museum, Shukkeien), then back to Miyajima for the night just to see the shrine all lit up. 1 day was perfect for me. You can climb up the little mountain on Miyajima (although I heard it may be under construction or something) or take a mini-cruise if you like too!

It's HOTTTT!!!!

I made an internet reservation and it went through smoothly. The single rooms have a double bed. The one annoying thing is they don't take emails but you can call them. There was always someone there who spoke enough English. I stayed with them in Tokyo and they were really nice there too! they even gave me a sweat towel for the heat...lol Oh and they don't take traveller cheques.

You might also went to check out www.hostelworld.com, they have some great rates for Japan.

Beppu has a hostel for $15/night, and Tokyo for $20/night, for example.

Regarding Toyoko Inn - highly recommend them! I stayed at one in Kanazawa for 5000 yen (US$50)...getting a free curry dinner saved me $10 right there...breakfast was a bit skimpy though. But still, worth having that as well.

Plus its very clean, and I always see them near train stations - so I am assuming generally always very convient to get to them as well.
